QUEEN CARNINAL

The patriotic Queen Carnival, whicn has been carried on at Qunua during the last few weeks was brought to a successful conclusion last Tuesday evening. For the purpose of competition the district was divided into north and south, and Miss D. Hill was selected as the northern candidate for royalty and Miss E. Trail as the southern candidate. The working committees arranged an attractive series of socials and sports meetings and as a result the settlers have had a busy time. The final wind-up social was held on date already mentioned and a good crowd assembled to hear the result of the competition. The figures were announced every half hour, the final declaration being made at 11 pm. The following result was declared by Mr E B. Hillam, who has acted as organiser, viz,, North (Miss D. Hill) £Bl 3s Id, South (Miss E Train £127 5s Id. Miss Trail was accordingly declared Queen of .the Carnival. After the declaration Mr Hillam said that he was more than satisfied with the resnlt. Hunua had not received any official notification that anything was expected of them, or if that notification had been received it had not been passed on. The settlers, however, had taken the matter up They had been handicapped and had lost several contributions owing to being late in the field, They had set out to collect £IOO but, Mr Hillam continued, they had more than doubled that amount collecting as they had £2OB 8s 2d. He thanked the contesting sides for the very fair spirit that had been shown and he mentioned that special thanks were due to Miss Hill, Mrs James, Mr and Mts H. H. Civil, Mr and Mrs G. W. Heald, and Mis M. A. Barker on the northern side, and Mr and Mrs Geo White, Mr and Mrs A. D. McConnel, Mr and Mrs A. Wallace, Mr Forrest, Mr Waring, Mr A. E. and A. Rickard and Miss Rickard on the southern side. Cheers were accorded for both sides and the remainder of the evening was spent in dancing.
