OTAHUHU.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council takes place next Thursday evening. Another old resident of Otahuhu pasted away on Thursday last in the person of Mr Stephen Fearnley at the ripe age of 79. The deceased had lived in Otahuhu over a long period, at one time being engaged in business in the main street He was of a rather retiring disposition and took no active part in local politics. The late Mr Fearnley is survived by a widow, one daughter and five sons, one of the latter being on active service. The Oiihnhu Bowling Club held its annual euchre party and dance in the Public Hall last Thursday evening, the prizes won last season also being presented during the proceedings. Progressive euchre was indulged in until ten o'clock and Mr W. McFadden (the retiring President) then carried out the presentation of the prizes He explained that that was the first occasion since the war began on which the proceeds from any club functions of that kind were not being devoted to patriotic funds. The finances of the Club had, however, become so depleted that it was necessary in order to maintain the upkeep of the green etc., that the Club should take advantage of revenue derived that evening. He added that the Club had so far contributed to patriotic funds the sum of £ll6, which he considered most creditable since they ouly had a membership of between 60_and 70. The dancing was most enjoyable and was appreciated by all present. Music was supplied by an orchestra consisting of Mrs C. Eraser and Messrs W. J. Dinnison and 0. Bobertson.

Charges of answering questions relating to his enrolment in a misleading manner, and of using a name other than that by which he was known on November 1, 1915, were admitted by Cornelius o'Bhea, alias John Gibbon, in the Auckland Police Court, before Mr E. D. Mosley, 8.11, on Friday. SeniorSergeant McNamara said that de fondant was working in the Railway Department at Napier when the ser vice ballots were inaugurated. He disappeared and used the name of Gibbon On the previous Monday he was found working at Otahuhu. The Director of Personal Services asked that defendant should be sent into camp at once The Magistrate imposed a sentence of three months' imprisonment, remarking that the accused had to answer to the civil authorities before being sent to camp. Three Otahuhu soldiers were amongst those who recently arrived back in the Dominion on board a hospital ship. Lieutenant A. West, son o' Mr E. West, Panmure .Road, was Jverely wounded in the shoulder and legs. Private Geo. Chapman, son of Mrs Chapman, Church Street, is still suffering from chest complaint and is an inmate of the Hospital Annexe, Auckland. Private T. Cavanagh, the third mnmber of the party, is a son of Mr T. Cavanagh, of Huia Road. Lieut m-

ant West and Private Cavanagh returned to Otahuhu on Saturday and despite their ailments they are particularly bright and cheery. The wedding was solemnised at St Aldan's Church, Remuera, recently of Mr James Wallace, son of Mr Gavin Wallace, of Otahuhu, and Miss Hilda Wilson, eldest daughter of Mr T.
