TUAKAU TOWN BOARD
The usual monthly meeting of the Tuakau Town Board was held on Tuesday last, the members present being Messrs Dynes Fulton (Chairman), J. H. Craig, J. 8. Ryder, W. J. Deeble, W. Barnaby, and Jas. Pirret, with A. H. Tapper (Town Clerk)
VOTE OF SYMPATHY Prior to the commencement of the ordinary business a motion of sympathy with Mrs T. McGahan and family, of Tuakau, on the death in action of Private "Tom" McGahan, of the Australian Forces, was passed. The Clerk was instructed to convey a letter of condolence to the bereaved family. WHANGARATA ROAD The ratepayers of Whangarata road lodged a complaint regarding the condition of the road and it was agreed to attend to the matter as soon as possible.
FOOTPATU IMPROVEMENTS The Board's Engineer (Mr J. Routley) reported upon the ashphalting of footpaths. He Btated that the total cost of the work, including crossings, was £614 18s 9d, the cost per square yard being 2s 10£ d. He estimated that an additional 2d per square yard would be required for tarring and sanding* The cost of crossings, after deducting the cost of ordiaarp ashphalting, was estimated at £Bl 15s 3d. The excess of cost over the estimate was £92, resulting mostly from the bad weather encountered and the large amount of labour and fuel required to dry the stone. It was decided to support the military appeal of Mr James Bull, the Board's quarryman. The Board's lease of the quarry expires in February next and in the meantime it was considered that it was necessary to secure as much metal as possible. Mr Craig was deputed to attend the Military Service Appeal Court in Auckland in support of the appeal.
MISCELLANEOUS It was decided to take steps to improve the footpath in front of the Public Hall. Mr Craig was empowered to make arrangements for impounding horses straying on the roads. It was arranged that a copy of the report of the Inspector of Nuisances in connection with the septic tank and drainage at the Tuakau Hatel should be forwarded to the Raglan Licensing Committee. Accounts amounting to £239 10s 9d were passed for payment.
There was a large attendance at the Tuakau Public HaU last Monday evening, when a concert and dancd, promoted in aid of the Bed Cross fund, eventuated. Music for the dance was rendered by Miss Geraghty and Mr W. H. Northmore. Messrs A. White and A, Allington proved efficient M.C's. On Friday last a farewell was tendered to Miss £ Foulkes, who has taken up a nursing position at Auckland. There was a large attendance, and Mr F. C. 8. Lawson, who acted as Chairman, on behalf of the residents of Tuakau presented Miss Foulkes with a handsome dressing case as a mark of the esteem in which she is held and in appreciation of valuable services rendered on various occasions. Mr Lawson spoke in glowing terras of Miss Foulkeb' ability as a musician and said that her tervices in this respect would be sadly missed. Tho recipient suitably re-ponded. A spirited contest for membership of the Town Board is likely to characteiise the forthcoming election. Six of the present seven members of the Board will, it is anticipated, offer their services again t<> the electors, but opposition nominees are expected to be in good force.
