FARMERS' UNION MEETINGS
The Whangarata members of the New Zealand Farmers' Union justly pride themselves on the fact that the movement which resulted in the starting of the present Trading Company originated in their branch. So Mr J. Fulton (President) informed Mr Oldfield, Organising Secretary, at a meeting of their branch held on August 16th, to hear an address on the Sub-Provincial Area scheme. At the close of the meeting Mr P. J. Cooney, Secretary, gave notice that at the next meeting he would move "That the branch affiliate with the Franklin Sub-Provincial Area."
A meeting of the Rama RamaRunciman branch of the Farmers' Union was held on Saturday, August 17th, Mr W. R. Walker in the chair. Mr S. Oldfield, Organising Secretary, was present and gave an address. A motion in favour of affiliating with the Franklin Sub-Provincial District was carried unanimously. During the meeting a good deal of discussion took place regarding matters concerning the Trading Company. A resolution in favour of the formation of a Hydro Electrical Power League in the Auckland Province was also carried.
A well attended meeting of the Mauku branch of the Farmers' Union was held at Patumahoe on Monday evening, August 19 th, Mr R. W. Johns in the chair.
The question of amalgamation of dairy companies came in for a good deal of discussion. The Organising Secretary, being present, explained the attitude of the Farmers' Union and answered all criticism. The meeting, by resolution, expressed itself as satisfied with the attitude of the Organising Secretary, although not in favour of amalgamation. The Organising Secretary explained the objects of the Auckland Provincial Industrial Association in the formation of a Hydro Electrical Power League. A resolution strongly supporting the movement was unanimously carried.
The usual monthly meeting of the Farmers' Union was held by the Waiuku branch in the Parish Hall on Wednesday, August 21st. Mr W L. West was in the chair. After the usual business was disposed with Mr Oldfield, Organising Secretary, addressed the meeting. A resolution supporting the formation of a Hydro Electrical Power League was carried. The results of the Dominion Conference and the work of the Traling Company was dealt with by Mr H. 0 Mellsop, Secretary.
Mr A. Jones, President of the Waipipi branch, presided over a good attendance of members on the evening of August 22nd, when the Organising Secretary of the Franklin Sub-Provincial District addressed the meeting on the work that the Union was doing.
A similar meeting was held at Glenbrook on Friday evening, Mr Hodgkinson in the chair. The branch decided to fotm themselves into a rabbit exterminating committee and to order poison at once. Mr Oldfield addressed the meeting and on conclusion was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
A very enthusiastic meeting of the Pukekohe East branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the Library on Monday evening last, when Mr Oldfield, Organising Secretary, was present and spoke on sub jects of interest to the members. In dealing with the Rabbit nuisance the members decided to take immediate action and formed themselves into a committee for that purpose and ordered poison, also deciding on boundaries and a united course of action.
