WAR ANNIVERSARY
The fourth anniversary of the declaration of war by England on Germany, which fell on Sunday last, brought with it the joyful knowledge that the tide of battle has at last turned and that after weary and trying periods of waiting and even of reverses the soldiers of the Allied nations are now the aggressors and are valiantly and effectually driving back the German foe. The military' representatives of the Allied countries can be depended upon to do their part on the battlefield and it is therefore the paramount duty of the people left secure in their homes to see that nothing is left wanting for the war to be carried through to a successful conclusion, so that a lasting and permanent peace for the good of the world at large may be assured. To this end meetings have been held not only in New Zealand, but throughout the British Empire, to commemorate the anniversary of the declaration of war and to solidify the determination of the British race to triumph once and for ever over the despicable Hun. Pacifists we have with us, probably bribed by German gold, to agitate for "peace at any price " in order to save the imminent downfall of the German Empire, but their pleas are unavailing for it is generally recognised that if German " kultur " is to be prevented from plunging the world into another bitter and bloody war it must be England and her Allies that will dictate the terms of peace. In the words which form the keynote of the anniversary manifesto issued by Mr Lloyd George we would accordingly exhort the people of New Zealand to" Hold Fast."
