WELCOME TO MR. PACEY.
DRTFD MTLK PROPOSALS. The return to duty of Mr. H. E. Pacey (the Managing Director of the New Zealand Dairy Association) on the completion of a holiday spent in Queensland for the benefit of his health, was celebrated by a welcome home tendered him and Mrs. Pacey in the Piccadilly Ten. Rooms, Auckland, last Thursday evening by the Association's staff. Mr. Dent (Secretary of the Association), who during Mr. Paeev'.s absence has been acting manager, presided, and most of the directors were also present, Mr. Morris (Manager of the Ngaruavvahia factory), in presenting Mr Paeev with an illuminated address, very cordially welcomed him back again, and assured him of the active cordial support of his colleagues. Mr. W. Y. Kirkman (Manager of the Pukekohe factory) also welcomed Mr. Pacey, and in doing so spoke of the prospects of an amalgamation of the interests of the dairy industry in the South Auckland district, saying they looked forward with pleasure to tuich amalgamation operating over the whole of the dairy industry in the South Auckland district. He added that they, as an Association, considered there was one man only, viz.. \ii'. Pmci y, their chief, best fitted by long training and experience to undertake the responsible position of directing the future destinies of the amalgamated interests of a united Waikato. Mr. Pacey, replying, said that the whole of New Zealand, and some parts of Australia, too, had had during the Inst few months a very bad attack of dried milk fever. Certain institutions had put forward a statement that the value of butter-fat was .T'fi per lb., and that if the business v, as properly organised on proper lines 3/fi per lb. would bo the value of butter-fat in the Auckland province. That was very good news if it were true, and his interest in the dairying industry was Mich as to cause him to say that he hoped it was for the sake of those who were producing. He believed their own Company would also benefit. They had some dried milk factories. The suppliers to those factories would lie glad to get .1/6, and what others could do they could do. He hoped the forecast would be realised. It it was, he should like to add that the gentlemen who had been instrumental in bringing about that appreciation of the position would be entitled to the most cordial thanks of the industry, and that they doubtless would receive il„ If, however, they did not. make good, they would be credited with having hoaxed the community, and doubtless would be execrated. In the course of a lew days lie hoped to be able to put up a proposition which would enablethe possibilities oi the scheme to be demonstrated in a practical way. Concerning amalgamation. Mr. Pacey said that lie did not think it was necessary for him to assure them that the proposition had his cordial loi-eiit, and would have his personal ,support. The directors of the Company in the past had shown themselves willing in a similar way. At the last two annual meetings of the Association In* had referred to those amalgamation [proposals .and commended them to the consideration of all producers in the South Auckland district. ITe was glad to learn that the seed had germinated, and trusted that amalgamation would be achieved as a way out of the present wasteful conditions. If, however, the interests concerned could not agree to amalgamate, and it competition must continue. lie would say that the New Zealand Dairy Association was in a better position to compete than ever before with all or any organisations which could be brought against it, and ha was more confident concerning the future than he bad ever been before
