OTAHUHIJ BOROUGH COUNCIL The following business, in addition to that reported in onr issue of the following day, was transacted at last Thursday's meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council, viz.,

SANDERS MEMOftUt FTTNP

The appeal by the Committee promoting the Sanders memorial scheme to perpetuate the memory of the late Lieut. Commander W E Sanders V.C having been brought before the Council by the Mayor, who spoke in support of the same, it was agreed on the proposition of Cr Todd to make a contribution of £5 ss, an amendment moved by Cr Field in favour of £lO being voted lapsing for want of a seconder. It was also arranged to open subscription lists at the hotels and shops.

BATHING SHEDS In connection with the contribution promised by the ladies interested in the provision of a ladies bathing shed, Cr Hall handed the sum of £lO over to the Town Clerk. There was, he said, a further promise of £2 more which would be forthcoming later and it was thought by the ladies that men should also contribute.

Cr. Todd commended the exceptionally good work done at the shed and also at the wharf by the Foreman. He moved that the Foreman (Mr G Kemplay) should be. notified of the Council's appreciation of his work.

Both Crs Clements and Brady endorsed all that Cr Todd had said and regarded the work at both places as being very creditable to the Foreman.

The motion being put to the meeting was unanimously agreed to. The Mayor remarked that the purchase of the Rowing Clubs shed by the Council had proved a very good bargain.

tOMPLAINTS Complaint was made by Mr J Dalton, of Walmsley Road, of storm water overflowing on to his property from the road. He asked that the same should be remedied.— Referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Mr. C T Btanton, Park Road, wrote stating that owing to the heavy flood he was compelled to wade through mud to his house in the absence of any footpath. He suggested that half a load of scoria should be supplied to him which he would be willing to spread so as to overcome the difficulty. Referred to the Works Committee. As the result of a communication received from Sir James Allen (acting Prime Minister) suggesting that a public meeting should be called for August 4th—the fourth anniversary of the declaration of war-to pass a resolution in support of the prosecution of the war, the Mayor at the Borough Council meeting last Thursday was empowered to convene such a meeting.

Three separate charges for failing to register as aliens under "The Registration of Aliens Act 1017" came before Mr F K Hunt S.M at the Otahuhu Magistrate 1 ! Coutt yesterday morning. Evidence was given that the defendants were all loyal subjects but belonging to friendly nations were unaware that they compelled to register themselves as aliens. In each case they were convicted and discharged For riding a motor cycle at an excessive speed on the Qreat South Road, Otahuhu on 23rd June last, a young man, aged 18, was charged at the same Court with that offence. He was convicted on the evidence of Sergeant Harvey for the Police and ordered to pay the costs (7s). Several civil cases were dealt with by the Magistrate. In one case where a medical practitioner was the plaintiff and the defendant was a young man with a wife and one child, who pleaded that he could not make any offer for the payment of a small debt, the magistrate questioned defendant as to his earnings and his mode of living. Doctors, he said, had his greatest sympathy, often they were sent lor at all hours and when they went it was only expected that they should be paid. The experience he found was that they were often the last to be considered when their account was sent in. To the defendant he said if he denied himself he could pay 5s a month Defendant replying to the magistrate admitted he did not drink or smoke, but went to the pictures with hie wife once a week and that cost Is. " Very well then," said His Worship, " You can deny yourself and I will make an order for 4s a month. When it is repaid you can go back to the pictures," paid the Magistrate, and the defendant then left the Court.

Under the chairmanship of Mr White, the Otahuhu Physical Culture Class gave a gymnastic display and musical evening in the Parish Hall Otahuhu, on Saturday in aid of the Red Cross funds. Songs were contributed by the Misses Emily Moffat, Nicholaon, May Moffit, and Mrs L Shepherd. Miss McArthur gave a recitation to the delight of everyone, and a well executed pianoforte solo was rendered by Miss Celia McArthur and a duet by the Misses Nicholson and Emily Moffat. Four ladies took part in a coon dance, the Misd||| Hutcheson and Johnson gave tP fencing display, a Dutch dance was engaged in by 16 ladies and the Misses Marjorie Whitely and M Hall danced an Irish jig together Altogether the entertainment wai a successful one.

There was a big attendance at the " Hard up" social and dance held in the Public Hall, Otahuhu on Thursday last, arranged by the Red Cross Carnival Committee. Messrs Wapps and J Mclvor acted -s M C's. Music was provided by Mrs C Fraser, Miss Pilkington, Mrs O'Hara and Messrs W J Dinnison and Somerton, Fines for various offences were imposed and the "hard up" supper supplied by the ladies consisted of tea, biscuits and cheese. The function was in every a decided success. In the interests of the Otahuhu Carnival Fund a bazaar was held in the Masonic Hull on Saturday last from 11 a.m to 8 pm under the direction of Miss Smith. There was a miscellaneous collection of goods on sale which fetched good prices and good business was done. The Otahuhu Salvation Army band played several selections and tea was served. Altogether the bazaar was a decided success. Miss Smith is to be commended for her effort on behalf of the Red Cross fund.

Three football Rugby League (Northern Union) matches were played on the Otahuhu football ground on Saturday last. These resulted in Otahuhu proving easily the winners in all three matches, the scores beiug Otahuhu Juniors v City Juniors 14—0 : Otahuhu (sth grade) v North Shore 16 —0: Otahuhu (6th grade) and North Shore 6—o. The ma'ches were witnessed by a large number of onlookers and the sum of £8 Is taken at the gate was donated to the Otihuhu Red Cross Carnival Fund.

From the latest reports the rosult of the canves, for the Otahuhu Red Cross Carnival Fund by Mr Parkin is encouraging and those who have not yet contributed to this most deserving object are asked to do so at an early date. A large attendance is anticipated at the euchre party and dance in connection with the carnival to be held at the Public Hull on Friday evening next.
