OTAHUHU.
Otahuhu is determined to do its best in the interests of the Red Cross appeal, and so far the response by the public has been encouraging. Last Friday evening a " Lorry " eoncert, presided over by the Mayor (Mr. A. McDonald) was given in the Main South Road, and proved a success. Messrs. W. Apps and F. Woods, as Pierrots, delighted the onlooking audience, whilst Mr. W. O'Hara gave an elocutionary item in costume, and was well received. Vocal solos were creditably rendered by Miss Emily Mofiitt, Miss Nicholson, and Mr. W. J. Dinniaon. Mrs. C. Fraser presided ai the piano. At the conclusion of the concert a Gift Auction was held, Mr. W. Apps being the auctioneer. The selling of the various goods created much amusement, and altogether a satisfactory sum resulted. Several young ladies rendered valuable assistance by collecting on behalf of the Red Cross Funds. On Saturday afternoon a Red Cross Tea and "At Home" were given by the ladies of the Carnival Committee in the Parish Hall, and in the evening an entertainment was provided for the children. For next Friday a "Hard Up" Social has been arranged for, and a large attendance is anticipated. A visit on Sunday last was paid to Otahuhu by the Rev. R. H. Radford, the Secretary of the Auckland Sunday School Union. In the morning he occupied the pulpit at the Otahuhu Methodist Church, and in the afternoon met the Sunday School teachers of the Presbyterian, Baptist anil Methodist Churches, with the view to forming a local Sunday School Union. As a result of Mr. Radford's conference, it was decided to hold a meeting at Otahuhu on the last Saturday in August.
Mr. Fred. Hunter, the eldest son of Mr. J. Hunter, who has been a keen student for some time of wireless telegraphy, lias recently passed with distinction his final examination as an operator, and he is now qualified to take up a position as a ship's wireless operator. At a meeting; of the Otahuhu Red Cross Carnival Committee, held in the Public Hall, Otahuhu, on Tuesday evening, presided over by the Mayor (Mr. A. McDonald), a schedule of events was submitted which will provide for various entertainments during the next three weeks. It was announced that the Coronation of the Otahuhu Carnival Queen (Miss Connie Lippiatt) would take place on the Ist of August, and a committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements for the successful carrying out of the ceremony.
Corporal T. Stringer, a Returned Soldier, of Otahuhu, has prepared and presented a Roll of Honour of all the Old Roys belonging to the Otahuhu Gymnasium Club who have given their services to their country. On Tuesday evening next the Roll of Honour will be unveiled in the Methodist Schoolroom. and the Mayor (Mr. A. McDonald) is expected to perform the ceremony. A lame attendance of the public is requested. What was regarded as the best social and dance that have taken place in Otahuhu for some years was that arm need by the Otahuhu Tennis Club and held in the Parish Hall on Monday evening last. The hall, which was prettily decorated for the occasion, presented an animated appearance, the varied coloured costumes of the ladies giving additional brightness to the surroundings. Mr. L. Shepherd capably carried out the duties of M.C.. and music was supplied by Mrs. C. Fraser (piano), Messrs. W. J. Dinnison and Symington (violins). The gathering, which was organised in the interests of the Red Cross campaign, was a decided success, and the Tennis Club management are to be commended for their effort.
