PATRIOTIC LEAGUE SOCIAL
A "Welcome Home" to returned "boys" and a "Farewell" to some on final leave took place on Saturday evening when a Social was held in the Carnival Tea Rooms, Pukekohe, over which the Mayor (MrHGB Mason) presided. The guests were Privates J Douglas and 8 Stayte (return# 1 men) and Privates R Miller and D Blake (on final leave) The function which was organised by the Pukekohe Women's Patriotic League, was fairly well a'tended, and a well arranged programme was submitted as f<3lows—Selection by the Orchestra (under the baton of Mr J Hindman); Monologue, " Tbe Day," Mr Jonas ; Song, " doming Home," Mrs E Smith ; Song, Mr T Walker; Waltz, "Summw Seasons" Orchestra; Recitation, " Not Understood," Mr Jonas: Song, 'Jo to Sea' Mr T Walker.
During the evening the Mayor, on behalf of the citizens of Pukekohe, welcomed Privates Douglas and Stayte home again. Mr C K Lawrie, the Chairman of the Tukekohe Patriotic Leapue, bade "God Speed" to those who were present oif final leave and trusted they would nobly do their duty. He congratulated the ladies who had made such excellent arrangements for that evening's gathering. Mr F Perkins, in a spirited speech, referred to the many homes affected by the war and expressed high admiration for those who had done their bit and were now amongst them as returned soldiers He felt sure all felt proud of such boys To Privates R Miller and D Blake he expressed a hope that they would maintain the honour of the British flag, and would nobly do their duty. Occasion was taken during the interval to present to the departing soldiers a safety raz>r each. The Mayor, in presenting these gifts, trusted they would serve to remind them of Pukekohe. He wished Privates Miller and Blake a safe return. Both recipients briefly returned thanks. Supper was served by the ladies, and the hearty singing of "Auld Lang Byne" brought the fußction to a close.
