POULTRY AND DOG SHOW AT PUKEKOHE.
1 lift first- exhibition under the auspices of liio newly-forrned Pukekohe Poultry, Gaze Bird and Kenny Club was held in the Premier Hal], Pukekohe, last Thursday and Friday. The poultry were on the whole of a good type, true to standard, and the utility classes, although email, were of excellent quality. American Leghorns, \\ hite and Silver Wyandottes, Rhode Island Red and Black Orpingtons predominated in the "fancy" section. The bird adjudged to be the best in the Show was a white American Leghorn cock owned by Mr. Clinch, of Huntly. According to the opinion of the judge, some breeders in the " Utility" section failed to understand the class of bird demanded. Whilst purebred birds were looked for, he said, there should be no extreme characters such as exaggerated combs, very loose feathers, or excessive size. Of dogs, Greyhounds were the largest benched. A handsome Collie dog, owned by Mr. V. S. Roberts, of Pukekohe, won the lady's bracelet and the collie special. This animal possessed a good head, was well filled, and was altogether a typical dog of his breed. In Pointers some good animals were benched, the exhibit of Mr. Fitzpatrick (Otahuhu) being the leading winner. Greyhounds were well represented, a black dog, belonging to Mr. E. Carter (Buckland), being the winner. An imported English setter bitch, exhibited by Mr. Saulbrey (Ngaruawahia), was one of the most valuable animals shown.
In the poultry classes local exhibitors in most cases were winners, and the show in that respect was a credit to the district. In the light and fancy breeds special mention should be made of the Campines and Golden Pencilled Hamburghs exhibited respectively by l Messrs. V. S. Roberts and J. McKinney, both of Pukekohe. These breeds are comparatively uncommon in the Dominion, but have a high reputation for their laying qualities, the latter being known as " the everlasting layers." Among duck-wing Came Mr. John Brooks (Huntly) exhibited an almost perfect male bird, its marking? throughout being specially commented on by admiring patrons.
