PAPAKURA QUEEN CARNIVAL

The first gatheiing in the interests of the Papakura Red Cross Queen Carnival effort was held in the Picture Hall, Papakura, on Monday night, when in spite of advert e weather conditions there was a crowded house. The concert was one of the best held in Papakura for a long time past, the following taking part: Mrs Crawford, Misses Bailey and Wright, and Messrs Ripley, Baker, Seaton and Rea. The Rev W. C. Wood (chairman of the Enteitainment Committee) britfly introduced Mrs A. Baker (the Papakura Queen) who, upon rising, was greeted with cheers. After thanking the people for their welcome and the honor done her by selecting her as their Queen, Mrs Baker delivered a capital- address (hiring which she appealed to the residents of Papakura to remember the boys at the front and to show by their giving the high estimate they set upon their work. As a result of her appeal several valuable gifts wero promised, including a section of land offered by Messrs Willis Bros ind a piano by Mr Slack.

The ladies of the district having provided a first-class supper, the later poition of the evening was spent as a "free and easy," the large gathering displaying a lively interest in the Carnival. The chairman announced that Messrs Richardson Bros were donating the profits of every Saturday night picture show to the Carnival, and he also gave a g neral outline of the future undertakings, mentioning that the Picture Hall had been placed 6t the service of the Committee free of chirge.
