Replying to a suggestion made by the Editor of this paper that his views on the dried milk industry would be interesting at this juncture, Mr D Cuddie, the Director of the Dairy Division, writes that certain enquiries are being made in regard to the matter and a little later he may have something to say on the subject but for the present he is unable to comply with the request to make any statement. At the Whangarei Winter Show last week the following successes were secured by Mr V. 8. Mr Brown's annual fortnight's holiday was over once more and as he trudged from the station with his bag, he was surprised to see the signs of a funeral outside the Mayor's house. " Who'sdead, my lad ?" he inquired of a small boy. " The cove wot's inside the coffin," answered the young rascal. Mr Brown turned to a man who had just left the house and repeated his question. " It's the Mayor " was the reply " The Mayor!" gasped Mr Brown. " Good Heavens ! is he dead ?" " Well, you feeble idiot!" snapped the man, " d'yer think he's having a blessed rehearsal ?"

A business change just effected in Pukekohe is that the billiard saloon belonging to Mr M Mclntyre has been acquired by Mr George H Armstrong consequent on Mr McIntyre's removal to Aka Aka to take up farming. Mr Armstrong has transferred his two billiard tables to Mr Mclntyre's former premises and the saloon now accordingly houses six tables, necessary structural alterations of the building having been carried out to permit of this. In celebration of the opening of the enlarged premises a " house warming " was given by Mr Armstrong last Thursday evening, Mr A. B. Barter presiding over & representative company. A dainty supper was partaken of and the usual toasts were honoured. Mr Armstrong's popu larity is such that his enterprise should be attended with wellmerited success.

'"Dairy Farmer" writes as fol lows: The much discussed problem of dried milk as the best paying proposition for the dairying industry is once again causing a suggestion that a fusion of interests of the various dairy companies would be to the advantage of suppliers by reducing management charges and avoiding over-lapping. I contend, however, that on the principle that "opposition is the soul of business" farmers benefit by rivalry. Only a few years ago prior to the Waikato Dairy Company making itself felt things pursued an even course and we had to be content with receiving a nominal amount for butterfat. Gradually home separation and cheeso making crppt in and thanks to such opposition prices soared up. The same thing is occurring now and one organisation has to bestir itself to eclipse the other. This is as it should be and ought to be pcrpetua'ed in prefe:erce to a combination beine brovght about which would, with activity no longer being necessary, cause a reaction and a drop iu pi ices. Farmers be on your guard and turn a deaf ear to the voice of the pacifist should the old wheeze of " unity is strength " be whispered abroad Yes, unity is strength, and we see it in our National Government, but few would deny that our Parliament would be strengthened if the National Government was confronted by a strong and formidable Opposition. Experience teaches and dairy farmers should be careful not to be misled. For Chronic Chest Complaints, Woods' Great Peppermint Cure. 1 IP, 2/1
