THE GREAT EFFORT. THE RED CROSS APPEAL Once again the clarion note of appeal goes forth to all to help THE GREAT EFFORT The stupendous struggle of the Allies to save humanity of to-day and the unborn millions of the future from Hunish, brutish, degradation is now at its height. Thousands of lives ure being daily sacrificed and huge numbers of the best and bravest of our race are lying bruised and broken as the result of their self-sacrificing attempt to save nations from perpetual bondage and our women and children from greater heartrending horrors than death itself. We cannot all enter the front trenches to directly fight the invader; we cannot all personally assist in the last sad offices to eur dead, nor even share, in humanity's cause the strenuous, urgent, and loving care so greatly needed by our wounded soldiers, but, living as we are in comparative safety and comfort, we must recognise it is our bounden duty to give, at least, a share from such eomfort, nay to even deny ourtelves many comforts to aid those self-denying women and men now at the front making strenuous endeavour to alleviate the sufferings of our wounded heroes. To assist this ,; great Samaritan Deed" the Pukekohe Patriotic and Red Cross organisations are now arranging to open a Campaign to be known as THE GREAT EFFORT with the intention to raise £I,OOO within a month, extending from Tuesday, June 25th, to Thursday, July 25th. This sum of £I,OOO is intended to he the Borough's contribution towards the £IO.OOO which the Franklin County hat been called upon to find as its share of the Great Rally Fund of £250,000 to be provided by the Auckland Province. £l,llOO may appear, at first glance, a large sum for the period stated but as a matter of fact £I,OOO is well within the amount the Borough can provide, as judged from the population basis; £1 per head of the adult population will provide the amount asked for or say 5/- per week for the four weeks' duration of THE GREAT EFFORT No doubt there are some heads of families who would find it difficult to provide even that small sum, but there are others well able to subscribe a much larger amount and will undoubtedly do so; therefore if the appealing societies asked for £IOOO as a DIRECT C-IFT from the Borough residents it could not reasonably be considered as an excessive contribution to THE GREAT EFFORT but they are not doing so because they are offering a quid-pro-quo, for a considerable part of the amount asked for, in the shape of entertainments, gift auctions and other methods; their endeavour in this respect shows they are honestly trying to make THE GREAT EFFORT appeal a light one ; towards that end they have already received substantial aid ; Messrs Stembridge and Co's very liberal offer to auction all gifts free of charge ; the Poultry and Kennel Club's gift of surplus funds from the coming show ; Miss M. Taylor's gift of proceeds from her Children's Competitions and entertainment; an offer from Mr C. Roadley to provide an evening's entertainment and other offers of a like fcind. A most liberal offer has been made by the lady proprietors of the Carnival Tea Rooms, they having placed their entire premises, furnishings and fittings in the hands of the ladies of the Patriotic League for a period of three weeks, from July Ist, free of all charge ; they have been enabled to do this through Mr C. K. Lawrie most liberally offering to forego the rent for that period ; this magnanimous offer is fully appreciated and will no doubt be turned to profitable advantage under the splendid organising ability of the Patriotic Society Ladies. Still there is much to be done, therefore the Committee ask one and all to come forward promptly with suggestions, offers of help, gifts of all kinds and money contributions and at the same time ask the Borough residents to remember that the proceeds of all personal effort, gifts, and money subscriptions will be laid in the lap of the " Great Red Cross Mother." The Greatest Mother in the World, who is stretching forth her hands to all our boys in need and physical suffering ; ready and eager to comfort ( at a time when comfort is most needed. Seeing all things with a mother's sixth sense that's blind to jealousy and meanness, seeing men in their true light but with a hidden side that is quickest touched by mercy, reaching out her hands across the sea to " No Man's Land " ; to cheer with warmer comforts thousands who must stand and wait in stenched and crawling holes and water-soaked trenches where cold and wet bite deeper than " Boch " steel or lead The Great Red Cross Mother is to-day warming thousands, feeding thousands, healing thousands from her store therefore the Patriotic Society and Red Cross League have no hesitation in placing this appeal before the Pukekohe Borough and District residents on behalf of our poor maimed and suffering soldiers and to ask them to give liberally, to give quickly—in fact to even deny themselves and for the period of the campaign to throw all the resultant proceeds into the lap of The Greatest Mother in the World "THE RED CROSS/ 9 Issued by the Patriotic League. Red Cross Campaign The 0a miviil Tea Rooms, by the kind offer of the Lady Proprietors, will be under the management of the Women's Patriotic Leagae for three week', from July Ist to July 20th.
