MERCER

At a general meeting of shareholders of the Waikato Shipping Company held at the Company's Office, Mercer, on Friday last, over which Mr Johnson (Chairman of Directors) presided, a resolution was passed that the share capital of the Company should be increased from £15,000 to £25,000. Mention was made by several shareholders that the difficulties which the company had to contend with since its inception were due chiefly to the lack of sufficient capital and as the future possibilities were so great there was every reason to think that with increased capital these difficulties would be overcome. The resolution was unanimously adopted, the members present being agreed as to the splendid future prospects of the Company. A social and dance was held in the Public Hall, Mercer, on Friday evening in honour of Private H. Robinson, who was on final leave. During the proceedings a presentation of a wristlet watch was made to the guest of the evening Mr J. T. Gillibrand, in handing him the gift, spoke of the many good qualities of Private Robinson and on behalf of the townspeople wished him God speed and a safec return- Private Robinson suitably replied. Excellent dance music was provided by Mrs Bufh, whilst Mr J. Hill ably acted as M.C.

There was a miniature Donnybrook at Mercer last Tuesday evening when some Maoris attending the korero that was in progress in opposition to the Government scheme for conscripting the Waikato tribe made a disturbance in the town. On Constable Horan endeavouring to restore order he was attacked by a small party of the natives and in self-defence he was compelled to use his truncheon, which he did with good effect, two or three of his opponents being laid low by the weapon. Charges of assaulting the Constable will be the outcome at the Magistrate's Court at Mercer nest Wednesday.
