DRURY
A very successful send-off social was tendered to Privates T. Cummins, W. Codlin and Jas. Quinn on Friday night. The gathering was presided over by Mr J. Flanagan. Items of interest were the pianoforte duet by Misses McNaughton and Oldham, a vocal solo by Miss McNaughton, and pianoforte solo by Miss Oldham, all being well rendered and applauded. The well-known entertainer Mr A. McElwain, from Auckland, was heard in many of his finest efforts. The speeches of the evening were delivered by Messrs Flanagan, Glasson, T. Brooks and Mrs McMurtrie. This form of gathering was a departure from the usual and it was decidedly a wise one as it catered for the oldest to the youngest. The toast of the guests was proposed by Mr W. H. C. Glasson and was responded to by Private Cummins in a terse and lucid speech. The toast " Women and the War " was proposed by Mr T. Brooks and was acknowledged by Mrs McMurtrie (President of the Drury - Runciman Women's Patriotic League). This lady is a speaker of great ability and she made the most of the shoTt time at her disposal. The catering for the supper was in the capable hands of Messrs J. and J. Rugg. The music for the vocalists was supplied by Miss McNaughton and for the danco by Messrs C-ossey and Morgon. Mr W Tooman as usual ably discharged the duties of M.C. The secretary and organiser, Mr J. Quinn, is to be congratulated on the success that his efforts attained. The ladies, who so kindly set the tables and attended to them, are to be complimented, the effect of the decorations being
most pleasing to the eye. On Tuesday night the Drury Bible Classes invited all and sundry to be with them when they tendered a farewell social to their late secretary, Private T. Cummins. /That the invitation was cordially accepted was evidenced from the large number of friends who put in an appearance i from the very outskiits of the district. The Rev. F. Hales presided.
