SCHOOL COMMITTEE FINANCE ! To the Editor !
Sir—l beg loavo to make a few observations regarding a letter that appeared in your issue of the 24th inst. over tho name of Mr W. Keyes. I note Mr Keyes unconsciously admits the incorrectness of his financial statement to the householders at the annual meeting and suggests that I have been exhibiting a certain document (a cheque book butt) to prove same. This certainly was my object. , At tho householders meeting Mr Keyes stated that a certain account was paid by the Committee, of which he was chairman. I challenged this and have since shown to responsible persons the cheque book butt to prove that this account was paid two days before ho was elected and the receipt handed over on the evening of the election. The term "unsecured liabilities" is certainly not appropriate. Anyone with knowledge of School Fund accounts will know that the quarterly allowances for incidental expenses are continuous and it is sometimes impossible for a Committee, be they ever so conservative, to avoid leaving a work unlinished or the next allowance mortgaged. We chose the latter course and the financial position was fully set out and explained by the then Treasurer (Mr Parsons) and myself to tho satisfaction of all reasonable persons. Those who have served on School Committees are aware that the Education Actrequires that the outgoing Committee shall give a full report of its proceedings for the year and had Mr Keyes given the Committee an opportunity to consider or frame a report instead of himself doing so, and leaving the other members in tho dark as to what it contained, my subsequent action and the present controversy could have been avoided. A good deal more could be said on this subject but I may state that it has been with extreme reluctance that I have at all entered your columns on this matter and I have confined myself rigorously to what I considered necessary.—Yours, etc., KOBT. J. GLASGOW, Chairman Onewhero School Com. Onewhero, May 27th, I'.) 1 <s.
