RED CROSS SOCIAL,
The first " social evening " given , for the Red Cross Fund was held on Friday, May 17th, Mrs Waters and Mrs C. W. Stephens being the joint hostesses. Mr and Mrs Russell, of North Road, who are leaving the district' very kindly placed their house and piano entirely at these ladies' disposal for the evening and no trouble was spared by a band of capable workers to ensure a perfect success. Three roojns were available for dancing and one was comfortably arranged for cards, while the long and spacious hall made an excellent centre for the music and contained seating for all as required and also doing duty as the supper room. The floors were in excellent condition and all rooms being brilliantly lit, the house presented a very gay appearance, nearly 80 guests being present. Dancing and various games, cards, etc., interspersed with songs from Mrs C. W. Stephens and Mr Jacobson and a duet by Mrs Hitchcock and Miss V. Waters, were all thoroughly enjoyed and a guessing competition to " guess the pig's birthday " also caused much mirth and considerably added to the funds, the fortunate winner being Mr Alan Finn. Another competition, guessing the weight of a goose, also proved most popular and shared full honours with the pig in bringing in funds for the cause. Several tied in this competition and guessed the weight exactly, Mr Rowe eventually gaining the prize. Quite a number of ladies acted as musicians during the evening, viz, Mesdames Russell, Gandy, Waters, Stephens and Hitchcock, Misses M. Dow and V. Waters and they kept things going merrily. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr and Mrs Russell for their kindness in lending their house and piano and to Mrs Russell also for her valuable assistance as principle musician, Mr Russell duly responded. The whole district was well represented and the total receipts from those present and from other friends, who being unable to attend kindly sent their subscriptions instead, amounted to the handsome sum of £ll.
