MERCER
In reply to a letter received by Mr E. H&llett as secretary of the Local Bodies Reception Committee from the Minister of Lands (the Hon D. H. Gathrie, M.P) that in his forthcoming visit north he would only be able to spare one day (Thursday next) for his proposed inspection of the Waikato river and enquiring whether one day would be sufficient a reply has been forwarded that a proper inspection could not b» carried out under a couple of days. At the time of writing it is accordingly doubtful as to whether the Minister's visit will be postponed or not. "The drive" in the coal mine at West, which the Waikato Shipping Coy recently acquired, has now reaohed the stage that it i-t anticipated that in two or thiee weeks time a large supply of firatclasacoal will be procurable. The indications ate that the mine is likely to yield an iaexhaurtible quantity of the mineral.
