PAPATOETOE

A special memorial service was held at the Papatoetoe Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning last conducted by the Pastor, Bev Potter, in memory of Private S. Fulton, Who was killed in action. The deceased soldier had held the position of Secretary to the church, and in the course of his sermon the Bev Porter referred to his noble life and said he (the Pastor) never had a more loyal supporter. Tennyson's "Grossing * the bar " was sung by the choir and at the close of the sermon the Dead Much in Saul was played by the organist (Miss Campbell). The whole service was most impressive. "Britain's great Statesmen and the Navy" formed the subject of a lectute given last Tuesday evening by Mr C J. Parr, M P., at the Public Hall, when there was a large attendance. The newly-elected Chairman of the Papatoetoe Road Board (Mr John Watson) presided over the gatheiing and at the close of the proceedings he proposed that a hearty vote of thanks should be accorded to Mr Parr for his able address and this was carried by acclamation.

The petition in favour of the formation of a Town Board for Papatoetoe whic contains about 120 signatures and representing a population of about 600, has been forwarded to the member for the district (Sir Frederick Lang) for presentation to the Minister for Internal Affairs. It is anticipated that no difficulty will be exoerienced in obtaining the necessary Order to form a Town Board.

A meetine for the purpose of farthering the Bed Cross Appeal now being made ih the Auckland Province was held at Papatoetoe last Tuesday evening. A committee was set up Mr A. Hall being appointed chairman, Mr John Watson, treasurer, with Miss Sutton and Mx F. C. Weston as joint secretaries. A meeting of the committee will be held tomorrow to arrange details. With the object of reducing Church debt a very successful gift sale under the auspices the Ladies' Guild aseo ciated with St George's Anglican Church was held last Wednesday afternoon and evening. The afternoon ceremony was officially opened by the Vicar (the Bev H. Mason). The stallholders were: Befreshmsnt st? 11, Mesdames Cruikshank and Hallberry and Miss Gane; Sewing and Fancy stall, Mesdames Daisky and Melsop; Produce, Mrs Ssdgvovs; Lollies, Mrs Beid and other ladies. During the afternoon and evening various competitions under the control of W. Cutford created a good deal of amusement and a Pish Pond, with Miss Kimpton in charge, was well patronised. A wellarranged programme of vocal and instrumental items was provided by Mrs Mellsop and Mr Jeans. At the close the goods donated were auctioned by Mr Outford and it is gratifying to record that about £6O was realised as the result of the day's effort The secretarial duties were most ably carried out by Mrs Sadgrove. We are glad to learn that Mr J. Cobine, of Papatoetoe, who recently underwent a serious operation in Auckland, is progressing favourably towards recovery.
