RED CROSS GATHERING. The Red Cross afternoon tea and social evening promoted by M«sdames Dufty, Langford, Ballard, Biddick and Mewcombe took place in " The Barn" on Wednesday, April 24th, and proved a most successful gathering. In opening the proceedings Mrs Sharp gave a very interesting review of work being done by the Red Cross organisation both in town and country. The afternoon was devoted lo guessing competitions, nail-driving, interspersed by musical aad vocal items, while brisk business was done at the fancy and vegetable stalls. The evening took the form of a social, when the building was crowded making dancing almost uncomfortable. At intervals the results of the various competitions were announced, [n the age of a pig, donated by Mrs M. Johnston, Miss Mackenzie and Jack Reid tied and in the draw the latter winning put it up to action, while another won by F. Ballard was similarly treated, netting £5. During the early hours, being then the anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, Mr Walker, in a few wellchosen remarks, welcomed two Anzacs, Messrs F. Kerr and W. Langford, both of whom took part on that eventful morning. The music for the dancing was gratiutously supplied by Mr Barker. The net proceeds, which amounted to £4O 4s Bd, have been forwarded to the Auckland branch of the Victoria Red Cross League. " The committee wish to thank all those who so generously assisted thus making the function such a marked success.

Can the district grow wheat is a question practically answered by a field of 8 J acres grown by Mr Mark Ballard, "averaging 41 bushels of milling wheat to the acre, besides two tons of straw per acre. This crop was grown by ploughing once out of the grass, discing in five cwt of carbonate of lime broadcasted, using four cwt bonedust and superphosphate (half and half), with two bushels of solid straw Tuscan.
