TUAKAU
TCAKAU TOWN BOARD. At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Tuakau Town Board held on Tuesday last there were present Messrs Dynes Fulton (chairman), J. H. Craig, W. J. Deeble, W. Glasgow, W. Barnaby, J. Pirret and Captain Ryder, with the Clerk (Mr A. H. Tapper). STREET WORKS. Mr W. H. Northmore wrote suggesting that the work now in progress in Liverpool Street to the north side of his property should be continued and in respect of the same he enclosed a contribution of £5 towards the cost—The Chairman reported that the work as asked for had been carried out.
CONCRETE ROADS. / The question of concreting Liverpool and George Streets, which the Engineer reported would cost £2OOO, formed the subject of a discussion by the Board. Mr Deeble was not in favour of concreting as he thought traction engines would not be able to pass over concrete roads and he questioned whether the expense involved would be warranted. If the roads were ploughed up and metalled with blue stone that in his opinion would answer the purpose. Mr Pirret was inclined to favour Mr Deeble's suggestion. Messrs Craig, Barnaby and Captain Ryder were all of opinion that concreting was the cheapest in the long run and for that reason they supported the Chairman who had advocated concrete roads.
Mr Glasgow regarded the financial aspect of the matter as an important one ; otherwise he agreed that concreting was the best
On the motion of Mr Pirret it was finally decided to defer the consideration of the matter until the Board had ascertained what financial assistance could be obtained from the Bank, the Clerk being directed to obtain alternative estimates from the Engineer for a macadamised road and for pitching.
THE "TIE-TJP" QUESTION.
In accordance with notice of motion given the Chairman proposed that the following resolution as passed on January 15th last be rescinded, viz.: " That tie-ups and stands for horses be not allowed in George Btreet or Liverpool Mreet." In support of his proposal Mr Dynes Fulton raid that after consideration he r» cognised that tie-ups were necessary.
Mr Glasgow urged that tie-ups should not be allowed and mentioned that they were not permitted in Otahuhu or Waiuku
Mr Craig was strongly opposed to the tie-ups being in the main streets. He suggested that if one was necessary lit- rfyould be in a side street. Hordes, he said, should not be allowed to stand in the main street and damage the kerbing. The motion rescinding the previous resolution on being put to the meeting was carried, the Chairman, Messrs Deeble, Barnaby and Captain Ryder voting for and Messrs Craig, Glasgow and Pirret against. The Chairman then moved that tie-up stands be allowed in the streets, the tie-up to be in the form of a post painted white with ring or hook on it to be placed inside the kerbing, or a h ook or ring in a verandah post if necessary providing the same is flush with the kerbing. Mr Craig proposed as an amendment that no action should be taken until the Board has some by-law to deal with it and the street work finished. The amendment was defeated and the Chairman's motion was carried, the voting being as in the previous instance.
£2OOO LOAN.
A resolution was passed authorising the seal of the Board to be affixed to documents forwarded by the Public Trust Office, Wellington, in respect of the loan of £2OOO. KINO COUNTRY FTRE. On the motion of the Chairman it was decided to open a subscription list in Tuakau towards the relief of the sufferers in the King Country fires. BY LAWS. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the Board on Tuesday, the 9th April, at 7.m. to revise the by-laws. accounts. Accounts amounting to £94 15e were passed for payment.
