Horse flesh as an article of human diet forms part of the solution of the problem of food supply now current in England as instanced by the following advt. from a London paper, viz: •' 100 Fat Horses wanted for human consumption; £7 to £2o. At a meeting of the executive of the Franklin Sub-provincial area of the Farmers' Union, held at the Masonic Hall, Pukekohe, yesterday, the applications for the post of organising secretary were further dealt with and five applicants were selected to be invited to attend a meeting to be held on April 12th when a decision will be arrived at.

The following notice pnblished in an English paper of February 2nd last by a local Food Control Committee desclbses the gravity of the situation caused by the shortage of food that was then current in England, viz: "On and after Monday next, February 4th, 1918, supplios of margarine and butter and of meat (Beef, Mutton and Pork) will only be obtainable in the Borough on productiion of Sugar Cards (Ra'ion Papers or and that the quantities so supplied will be limited to a quarter of a pound of margarine or butter, and to half a ponnd of meat per person por week. No guarantee can, of eourso, be given that the amounts mentioned will be available, but it is hoped that the scheme will effect a more equitable distribution amongst consumers thin recently."

; There was a large attendance at the "Welcome Home" to returned soldiers, held at the Premier Hall on Tuesday evening last, organised by the Pukekohe branch of the Women's Patriotic League. The Mayor (Mr H. G. R. Mason) presided, supported by the Rev J. F. Martin, Messrs E. Allan, F. Peikins, and two returned soldiers, Corpl. W. H. Hawke and Private Keene. The stage was prettily decorated for the occasion and the members of the League, with Mrs Baxter as Honorarv Secretary, aie to be congratulated on the excellent arrangements made for an enjoyable evening. Tim proceedings were opened with the singing of the National Anthem, after which appropriate addresses of welcome to ''the boys" were delivered by the Mayor, Rev Martin, and Messrs E. Allan and F Perkins. An excellent programme of vocal and instrumental music was submitted by the following : Pukekohe orchestra, overture ; pianoforte duet, the Misses Perkins and I. Duncan ; pianoforte and violin duet, Miss Webb and Mrs J. Wylie : pianoforte and violin duet, Misses MeGovern and O'Connor ; songs by the Misses Muir, Cohen (Auckland's, Messrs I). Klavell and T. Walker ; vocal duet, Mr and Mrs A. Lakeinan, and recitations by Mr A. Lakoman and Mr R. Harper. Corpl. Hawke, on rising to respond for the "welcome" accorded him, r vcived a grout ovation. In fulfilment of Mr Clement Wreege's prediction of rough weather for Ea-ter drenching rain is falling to-day and the outlook for the holidays is threatening. Mr R. Higginson, of Aka Aka, an ex-member of the Franklin County Council, will shortly betaking up his residence in Pukekohe, having purchased Mr S. W. Luxford's property on Pukekohe hill.

Mr W. Y. Kirkman, manager of the Pukekohe Dairy Factory, returned to duty this week and is much improved in health as the result of his recent holiday. Owing to the Easter holidays the usual monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council will be held on Thursday, April 11th, instead of on Thursday next.

We regret to learn that Mr H. E. Paccy (managing director of the N.Z Dairy Association) is seriously ill and that his condition is causing grave anxiety.

Special picture programmes for the Premier Hall, Pukekohe, have been arranged for the holidays as follows: Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. The star features in each case are for Good Friday, " The Bad Boy," featuring Robert Harron. Saturday, episode nine of "The Iron Claw." Easter Monday "Her New York," featuring Gladys Hulette in a new and original World drama. Whilst playing in the Pukekohe School grounds yesterday afternoon after school hours, Master Gordon Fitness had a fall and sustained a broken leg. He was attended to by Dr Wake, who subsequently conveyed him by motorcar to the Auckland hospital. With the approach of the cold weather Messrs H. Dell and Son, in a replace advt. in 'this issue, call attention to the stock of canvas they have at their establishment at Pukekohe ready for making into horse and cow covers. Having purchased the same a year ago their prices are 30 per cent below current rates -
