MANUREWA TOWN BOARD.

Monthly Meeting.

At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Manurewa Town Board held on Monday evening there' were present : Messrs T, J. Corin (chairman), H. V. Burton, C. Coxhead, C. H. Lupton, T. Wood and E. Pegler, with the Clerk (Mr T. W. Bell).

ADVAXCE, MANUREWA !

In reply to a request made by the Board for a separate building to be erected as> a post office and for a permanent official to be placed in charge, as also for the establishment of a letter-carrier's delivery, the Chief Postmaster, Auckland, replied that the matter of the post office would have to stand over until after the war and that the suggested lettercarrier's delivery could not be acceded to.

Mr Pegler considered that further representations should be made to have a post office building provided especially as the sum of £7OO had been voted on the Estimates for that purpose. He thought that the district was being imposed on and contended that the agitation for a new building should be continued. Mr Burton agreed with Mr Pegler and also expressed the opinion that Manurewa should have a stationmaster. At present, he stated, Manurewa was only regarded as a flag station and no responsibility was accepted for the delivery of any goods. He gave instances where goods had been lost and no redress could be obtained. It was time, said the speaker, that Manurewa received some better consideration by the Railway Department as the loss of goods was a serious item. Mr Pegler remarked that if a public meeting were called the support of the public would have greater weight with the authorities concerned. Mr Lupton c ncurred with the suggestion that a building for a post office should be provided. Mr Pegler advised that information should be obtained as to the business transacted at the Papatoetoe Post Office and Railway Station when a stationmaster and postmaster were respectively appointed with a view of supporting their arguments. After further discussion it was agreed on the motion of the Chairman that the Board should act as a deputation to wait upon the Premier when next in Auckland to urge the claims of Manurewa for a post office building and for the appointment of a stationmaster. STATION ROAD FOOTPATH.

The Chairman reported that the Station Road footpath had now been completed and the work was generally regarded by members as satisfactory. It was decided to complete a small portion of the footpath unfinished at the corner of Massey Road. lupton's road. A plan of the proposed deviation of Lupton's Eoad was submitted by Messrs Harrison and Grierson, surveyors, relating to land to be taken for road purposes through portion of Railway Reserve.-The plan was signed by the Chairman and Clerk as required by the Lands Department.

With regard to the formation of a portion of Lupton's Road it was decided that as soon as levels were obtained tenders should be called for the work. HALL-AIFRIBTON ROADS.

Complaint was made by Mr Burton that the state of the footpath between Hall and Alfriston Roads was unsatisfactory and required a further coat of tar.-It was decided to write to the County Council on the subject. RESIGNATION OK CLERK.

Mr A. T. Bell tendered his resignation as Clerk to the Board. He stated that he desired a more permanent and liverative position and thanked the Board for the many kindnesses he had received whilst in office.

Mr Lupton expressed his regret at Mr Bell's decision and asked if he would be prepared to reconsider the matter.

Mr-Bell replied in the negative

The Chairman then' moved that the Clerk's resignation be accepted with regret and this was adopted. The Chairman proposed and Mr Pegler seconded that Mr 11. Kay, a returned soldier, should be appointed Clerk to ihe board as from the next meeting—Carried. KINO COUNTRY FIRES Mr burton in referring to the terrible suffering caused to many settlers by the effects of the recent bush ii.-es in the King Country, thought that the Town Board should take the lead and help the sufferer*. Aft»r some discussion he moved that the emu of £lO should be donated by the Board towards the relief of the distressed

Messrs Pegler and Lupton spoke in support of the motion and the same was unanimously earned —lt was understood that the Board will be prepared to receive subscriptions towards the Relief Fund. riIILDRENS 1 HoME

The Chairman reported that in consequence of the Manurewa Children's Home not having paid their rates the subsidy had been lost and as a donation of £lO was dependent on the rates being paid this would now lapse. —lt was agreed that such donation should be given to the King Country Belief Fund.
