LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Ratepayers of Franklin County are notified that rates are now payable and that legal proceedings will be instituted in the case of all rates not paid by the 23rd inst.
It would seem that the extension of the Waiuku railway from the completed portion at Patumahoe on to Waiuku has been relegated to the distant future since the Public Works Department's locomotive that has been used on the line last week took its departure southward. Not only is the construction of the line thus hung up but even the section from Paerata to Patumahoe is not available for passenger traffic and only has a goods train running on it once a week.
A meeting of the Executive Committee of the new Franklin sub Provincial area of the N.Z. Farmers' Union was held at Pukekohe on Friday last, over which Mr Walter Johns presided. The chief business of the Committee was the consideration of the applications, numbering about 130, for the post of Organising Secretary for the district. These were finally reduced to eleven and the selected candidates are to be asked to attend a meeting of the Committee at an early date. The following is the text of a written notice that was publicly posted up on a fence at Pokeno last week by an indignant County ratepayer, viz: "I am not going to allow anybody to run a drain through my paddocks to run the water off the roads. There is quite enough water going through my property without running it off the roads. I think it is a d cheek on the Franklin County Council's part."—Then followed the writer's signature, against which a wag had written in pencil "Good hoy, Dave" and another " Are we down-hearted ?" The production of the document by Cr Hille at the meeting of the County Council last Friday created merriment. The only way to secure a copy of the " Times " every issue is by place ing an order with your newsagent. Agents have no spare copies 'or chance sales; we print only what yre ordered by the agents.
