TUAKAU

TUAKAU TOWN BOAED

At the monthly meeting of the Tuakau Town Board held on Tuesday last there were present Messrs Dynes Fulton (Chairman), W. Barnaby, W. Glasgow, J. Pirrett, W, J. Deeble, J. H. Craig, Capt. Ryder, with the Clerk (Mr A. fl. Tapper). LOAN MONEY With reference to the application to the Public Trust Office for a further instalment of loan money for the purpose of carrying out street improvements the Clerk reported that he had received a telegram from that office offering to grant a loan of £2OOO for a term of 36 years and in the absence of the Chairman he had replied that the Board would be prepared to accept the loan on the terms offered. On the motion of the Chairman the action of the Clerk was confirmed.

DOMINION BOAD EXTENSION In regard to the petition presented some time ago making application to the County Council for the opening up and extension of Dominion road, which would provide an easier access to Tuakau from Bazorback, Mr P. Allsop, of Whar-garata, wrote to the Board inquiring if the work was likely to be carried out. He added that the settlers were anxious to have the work carried into effect.

The letter was received, the Clerk being asked to enquire from the County Clerk when the road in question was likely to be provided. BRIDGE NEAR FACTORY

In the matter of the provision of a bridge over the creek near the butter factory the Chairman reported that the estimated cost would be about £25. The contribution by the Board would amount approximately to £l3, whilst Messrs Oldham and Bycroft had agreed to provide £B, and Mr Denver had offered to do the concrete work at his own expense. OEORGE STREET IMPROVEMENTS

With reference to the calling of tenders for the proposed earth work in George street Mr Deeble questioned whether it was judicious to do the work at the present time and considered that the same should be postponed. The Chairman replied that although ah advertisement appeared in the local papers inviting tenders for the work the Board were not compelled to accept any tender. The plans and specifications of the proposed work were then submitted to the meeting and considered. Owing to the uncertainty of the weather at this season of the year Mr Craig expressed the opinion that it would be advisable to postpone the work. The Chairman was also inclined to share this view. The construction of the bridge, he suggested, could, however, be proceeded with now but in view of the lateness of the season and the heavy traffic on the road the earth might be carried out in the spring. He mentioned that the work referred to in the specification was from the sale yards in George street to the Town Board's boundary near Mr Collins.' Mr Deeble thought that whatever work was done should be of a permanent nature and urged' that it was desirable that the Board should be acquainted with approximate cost of the earth work and the metalling. He accordingly moved " That the Board's engineer (Mr Boutly) should be asked to furnish an estimate of the cost of (1) removing the earth work and (2j pitching and metalling George street from the sale yards to the Board's boundary." This motion on being put to the meeting was unanimously agreed to. CARTING OF SPAWLB On the motion of Mr Craig it was resolved to invite tenders for the carting of 290 yards of spawls. WHANOARATA ROAD Mr Deeble drew attention to the bad state of the Whangarata road which required repairing and the Chairman replied that the same would receive attention. A COMPLAINT Complaint was made by Mr Deeble that there was not sufficient fall provided for the storm water in front at his shop in George street. The Chairman remarked that it was a matter fur the engineer and u<>t for the Board, and no doubt if Mr Routly's attention was drawn to it eonie improvement would be effected. ACCOUNTS Accounts amounting to £255 159 8d were passed for payment.
