PAPATOETOE
The Papatoetoe Tennis Club journeyed to Otahuhu on Saturday last and played a match against the Otahuhu Club, the latter winning by 10 games to 6. Mr J. Buchanan has disposed of his property in Wallace road to Mr C. Landen.
Commenting on the progress the Boy Scouts Band have made since the instruments were issued to them not more than four months ago, a well known Auckland musical critic, who was present at the opening of the Town Hall on Wednesday last, stated that it was seldom that an adult band could make a public appearance under nine months and he considered that the manner in which the boys performed and the feeling with which they played was something out of the ordinary. He predicted a great future for the Baud and also paid a tribute to the conductor, Mr Calkin, for his good work amongst the boys. The public of Papatoetoe have beer very generous in their support towards this worthy object and they will find in the future the benefit of having a band in their midst. Already requests are coming in from all quarters for the Band's services <L and it is
hopedjin a few mouths' time that they'will be sufficiently iwell advanced to accept engagements. On Saturday evening last Messrs Coburn and Erneste gave the first of their] weekly picture entertainments in'the new Public Hall. All seats were free for the occasion as an opening introduction to what the public may expect to see in the future. If the pictures as shown on Saturday are a sample of what is to follow patrons will be well catered for. The new Hall is well adopted for this kind of enterprise and it was filled to overflowing, numbers even standing. The reels are supplied by the Frazer Film Co. and produced by the Trans-atlantic, Red Feather Photo Co. The programme contained patriotic and comic items. Great credit is due to the efforts of the orchestra, which contained some local talent Although one or two members were a little shaky at times, no doubt with more practice this will be overcome. A collection was taken up during the interval in aid of the local Boy Scouts' Band which deserves all the support that can be given it by the public. Altogether the opening entertainment was a thorough success and a credit to the proprietors.
