MANGERE.

PATRIOTIC GIRDEN PARrY Under the auspices of the Mangere Women's Patriotic League, a well arranged garden party was recently held in the beautiful grounds of Mrs Hain's, at Mangere. Sir Fredk. Lang, MP., performed the opening ceremony and in a pleasant speech commended the effort being made by the ladies as a worthy object Major Lusk and the Hon G. Fowlds also spoke, their addresses being attentively listened to. One of the many attractions was the bevy of young ladies becomingly attired selling lollies, while the cookery competitions under the charge of Miss Massey afforded a good deal of interest. The prize winners were: Best plate of scones, Mm H. EUett; pikelets. Mis Wallace; Queen cakes, Miss Win gate; shortbread, Miss Gooseman; tarts, Miss Wingate; Madiera cak«, Miss Wingate; sponge cake, Mrs C. Gooseman; fruit cake, Mrs (J. Gooseman ; jam sandwich, Mrs Dargaville. Tea was served in a laige marquee under the auperintendeiiCß of Miss Gooseman Mesdames A. Hen wood and Soniers had charge of the Provision stall; strawberries and cream and ices were dispensed by the Misses Muir, Boyd and Goldie, while Miss Wallace, in charge of the bran tub, did a good trade with the youngsters. The help of many male workers was much appreciated and contributed towards the success of the function. During the afternoon the proceedings were enlivened by the music rendered by the Coast Guards Band Mr House acted as auctioneer fur the occasion and good prices were realized for the vnrioua gifts donated towards the funds.

It is gratifying to learn that the sum of £B6 lis lOd has, as th* re suit of the gathering, r>een con-ribu ted to the Red Cross Funds.
