OTAHUHU
Fur placing an obstruction on the railway line at Otahuhu a boy of nine yean of age was brought before Mr Wyvern Wilsen, 8.M., at the Juvenile Court held on Monday last at the Otahuhu Court House. It appears that the youngster placed four pieces of iron hooping between the rails and thereby committed a breach of the Eailway Act. The father having stated that his son had already been punished for the offence His Worship admonished him and he was discharged. Sergt. Harvey, who during his holiday leave has visited Wanganui, Palmerston North and Taihape has returned to duty looking decidedly better for the change. The local fire brigade are already feeling the effects of the war by the absence of so many of their members who have joined the forces and the calling up of their chief officer Oapt. Wilson is causing the Brigade much consideration.
The question of the Borough Council meeting only once a month has been suggested and it is more than probable that a monthly gathering will suffice. With the enforcement of the Standing Orders with regard to the conduct of the meeting! in future members will not have to prepare a long speech and they will only have to speak once on the point at issue. After all it is not always what Councillors say but what they do which counts most when their term of office expires. With the continued fine weather holidays are being extended and business everywhere is regarded as slack. The Otahuhu school re-opens on Monday next and with the return of children to school there i* some hopeful indication that business will improve. In the absence of a quorum pi members yesterday at the special meeting of the Borough Council sonvened for the purpose of formally fixing the day of the statutory weekly half-holiday for the borough no resolution was adopted. The position now is that the day of holiday, presumably Saturday as heretofore, will be gazetted by the Minister of Labour.
Mr J. Mackenzie's many friends will be sorry to learn that he hai again i ijured his knee, the mishap having occurred whilst he was working at the Union Soap and Oil Works. It will be remembered that he sustained a similar accident about six months ago when working for Mr H. J. Hall, which necessitated hii removal to the Auckland Hospital. It has been necessary owing to the nature of the injury for him to again enter the hospital.
