PAPAKURA.

ferere injuries were received yesterday by Alexander Kingston, a railway workman, of Papakura, necessitating bis removal to the Auckland public hospital. While working a horse tip-waggon on the railway line at Drury, his foot caught in a sleeper, with the result that he fell, and the waggon passed over his left leg. The leg was badly crushed, but it was not decided last evening whether amputation would be necessary. The Papakura Town Board meet on Monday evening next. Many friends will be pleased to learn that both Mr and Mrs E. S. Cole are making satisfactory progress towards recovery after their recent accident

Under the chairmanship of the Yicar (the Rev. W. C. Wood) a large gathering assembled at the Picture Hall on Thursday evening last when the " Bend-off" Committee held a social and dance in honour of Sergt P. Johnson, Private L. ParmeDter, H. Matherson, W. Lever, R. Whitford, R. McLennan and C. Wallace who were on final leave An excellent pfogramme of vocal and instrumental music was presented as follows Songs by the Misses M. Hutchinson and Woods and Messrs T C. Seaton and G. Poltridge; recitations bv Miss Grace Wright and Mr T. J. Corin; cornet duet bv Messrs Gibbs and Pilkington ; and a cornet solo by Mr 8 WiUon. Occasion was taken to present each guest with an order for goods to the value of one guinea and in making the presentation the chairman spoke of the high esteem in which all the " boys ' were held and commended them for the sacrifices they were making in the interests of the I ominion and Empire A reception was also given to Private Ralph Grant who had returned wounded, having been injured in the leg with shrapnel. Lieut. R. Gillespie (Hunua) who is now on furlough was also a guest of the Committee. This officer who is well-known throughout the district was one of the first men who left Papakura for the front and he has seen a good deal of service. Following the concert a dance was held which was regarded as the most t-uccessful during the season. Mrs Harold Walters and Mr Poldridge supplied the music and Mr C. C. Tuelly creditably carried out the organising of the evening's function Most of the material from the Star and Garter hotel, Panmure, has been brought by traction engine prior to being utilised in the building of the Papakura hotel. The contract for this removal has been carried out by Mr Leeky Smith, of I levedon. The concrete foundations for the new building are nearly completed.
