MANUREWA

MAN CREW A TOWN BOARD. LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. At the postponed monthly meeting of the Manurewa Town Board held last evening there were present Messrs T. J. Corin (chairman), H. V. Burton, F. Woods, C. and G. Ccxhead, C. H. Lupton, with the Clerk (MrT. W. Bell). DOG LICENSES. Mr Alex. Bell, clerk to the Manukau County Council, in a letter addressed to the chairman intimated that if the Board had ordered the necessary dog collars they would be paid for by the County and the commission for collecting the dog licenses would also be paid. The clerk of the Board wa* appointed Dog Tax Registrar for the Town B >ard area. KILL-CLAUDE ROADS. With reference 11 the application by the Board for a contribution towards the cost of making the connection between Hill and Claude Roads, Messrs Percy C. Holder (Clevedon) and T. Hamilton wrote declining to making any contribution.

The matters in question were accordingly allowed to lapse. RAILWAY RESERVE. With reference to the Board taking over for road purposes two portions of Railway Reserve at Manurewa containing abont U acres Mr J. Young, Railway Land Officer, Wellington, wrote that a Proclamation had been published in the New Zealand Gizatte dated the 6th December last allocating the land for the purposes of a road. Replying to a complaint made by the Board that offensive drainage was being discharged from the property of the Manurewa Children 1 ! Home on to Russell road the secretary (Mr Thos. E Whitton) wrote that arrangements had been made to have the drainage in question satis* factorily dealt with.

HILL ROAD On the motion of the Chairman the Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Martin, Surveyor, asking him to take the levels of Hill road from Puriri Park boundary to Holder's corner. As soon as this was done it was agreed that tenders should b« called for the formation of that portion of Hill road.

JOINT LOAN £2OOO. The Chairman reported that the Manukau County Council were not in favour of a loan being raised to meet the cost of the work for the approaches to the high level bridge but would be prepared to fulfil their obligations as successors to the Manurewa Road Board

After the explanation given and the Board being of opinion that when the ratepayers asked for certain work to be done that the same should be proceeded with it was resolved on the motion of the Chairman that another loan poll should be taken, the Clerk being appointed to act as Returning Officer and being also authorised to take the necessary steps to raise a loan for £2OOO.

ri'BLIC HALL The Secretary of the Public Hall having written agreeing to hand over the Mannrewa Publio Hill property to the Town Board on condition that the Board took over all liabilities which included amortgage on the property belonging to the Trustees ftf that building the Chairman explained that from a financial standpoint the proposition wu ft sound one as the property in question was worth approximately about double the amount at which it was offered to the Board He desired that all the members should fully consider the proposal so that no misunderstanding should arise in the future. Mr Corin expressed the opinion that he did not think it

jjpMMsaiy to take a poll of the ratepayers on the question unless the Board specially desired it as such groceedings would be expensive. y Mr Lup+on did not think it right ■pntthe ratepayers should be saddled with a mortgage on the hall without being consulted. He heartily sup ported the views expressed by the Chairman that the acquisition of the hall by the Board was "good business," but arged that it» che interests of the public a poll shouu' e taken. The Chairman replied that he had no objection to a poll and on his motion, seconded by Mr Lnpton was resolved that the Public Hall Trustees having agreed to take the necessary steps to hand over the property to the Town Board on the terms and conditions mentioned the Town .Board agrees to accept the offer made by such Trustees subject the consent of the ratepayers at a poll to be taken at a future date. The resolution was rarried unanimously. ACCOUNTS Accounts amounting to £4O Is 5d were passed for pavment.

Miss Craig, who has held the MBtinn of Postmistress at Manurewa for some years, has resigned from the position. Her successor is Mrs Pattullo who took over ..he office as from the Ist January last. Among the many " boys *' who have recently returned from the front is Private Hubert Kay, a very popular Manurewa soldier, who was somewhat seriously wounded in the thigh at the battle of Armentieres. Despite his many experiences the gallant soldier looks fairly well. There is every indication that the main South Roal at ManurewA will soon be,a long row of dwellinghouses and shops. A shop and dwetlinghouse of five rooms is now being erected opposite the Manurewa Town Board's office by Mr T. J. Corin for Mr R. Thorpe and the same will give a more business-like Appearance to this part of Manurewa.
