BATHING FACILITIES. Cr Hall presented a petition from lady residents requesting that the Council should provide a bathing shed at the end of Avenue Road alongside the wharf for the use of lady bathers , The petition stated (I) That there was no shed for ladies at the end of Avenue Road; (2) That it was the most central road in the Borough leading to the beach ; (3) That it was the only place at which diving could be indulged in; (4) That although Piinces Street landing was most useful for children's picnic parties the water there was not deep enough for diving. It was suggested that the present shed on the south side of the wharf should be allotted to lady bathers an 1 that a bathing shed for men should be erected on the northern side. Cr Hall, speaking in support of the petition, pointed out the advantages of Avenue Koad site as against Princes street, which was further away from the township. He urged that the request should be granted. Cr Clements reported that he with Cr Todd had inspected the Avenue Road site and whilst both were in favour'of better facilities being provided they could not recommend the same as the cost (£3O) was more than was warranted at present. Cr Clements also mentioned that the tarring of roads had been abandoned on account of the need for economy and the shed not being an urgent matter they were not in favour of it being provided as they were guided by the Council's need to economise. Cr Stringer remarked that the Public Service Committee had turned the proposal down and would do so
again. Cr Todd thought that if the petitioners bad collected an amount equal to 29 a head probably the Council would consider the question. Cr Hill pointed out the advantages of salt water bathing and expressed the opinion that the cost for the facilities desired was comparatively small. After further discussion on the motion of Cr Wild man it was agTead that the Council should meet some representatives of the petitioners on the site at an early date.
