Mears) that the Franklin County Council should be asked to carry out the improvements to the end of Dominion road or Red Hill, in respect of which it was understood a Government grant had been made but had not yet been spent. Attention was also drawn to the desirability of keeping stock off the roads as the nuisance was increasing.

The Chairman mentioned in regard to Dominion road that he had had. an interview with the late chairman of the County Council, who expressed the opinion that some money was atill unexpended. He (Mr Gillespie) suggested that enquiry should be made to the Council as to the amount available.—This was agreed to. Mr Holt remarked that to pro- I perly reform and repair the road would cost about £3OO, but he did not regard the time opportune to warrant such expenditure. He suggested that a man should be employed to repair the road to meet present needs. Mr Markwick agreed with Mr Holt's suggestion aud it was decided to have the road repaired. j On the motion of the Chairman | the Clerk was instructed to inform j the Ratepayers' Association that the Board could not recommend an expenditure of £3OO, the cost of the work, but would have a man em ployed to temporarily repair the road. HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION. Mr E. S. Cole waited on the Board and recommended the fixing of Saturday afternoon in each week as the statutory weekly half holiday, instead of Wednesday as at present. Mr Markwick produced a petition signed by 15 business men and shopkeepers asking that recommendations should be made for the Saturday half-holiday. Mr Cole mentioned that in most adjacent places the Saturday afternoon was adopted and was generally regarded as satisfactory The chairman pointed out to Mr Cole that according to the Shops and Offices Act the petition should be from shopkeepers and shop assistants and not from " business men " The petition, he added, would be duly considered.

He added that if authority was given for the necessary work to be proceeded with the club would pay a ,rent for the accommodation. Mr Mark wick prOprsed thaMhe work should be done and the reswH» tion was carried, Mr Holt voting against the proposal and Mr Campbell not voting.
