MANUREWA

RED CROSS TEA Another very successful Red Cross tea was given.-in the Tublic Hall on Wednesday, 'November 21st. The hosts on that occasion being Messrs Alex Muir, Goo Coxhead, J. Dreauon; and 11. V. Burton. The building was artistically decorated with Hags, greenery and llowers and those responsible for the decorating are to be congratulated for the success of their eiforts. Musical items were rendered by Mr T. C. Seatou, and recitations were contributed by M. Harris. The Kev W. J. Shaw, who acted as chaplain on a hospital ship that carried the wounded from France to England during the battle of the tSomme, gave a descriptive account of the work of dealing with the dill'eient classes of cases. The boat, ho said, whilst he was on it did no less than 44 trips across the English Channel and carried 16,000 cases. He also stated that within 24 hours from the time the men were hit thoy were placed upon the boat. A pet lamb, presented by Mr Muir for a weight guessing competition, was won by Mr Blenherassett, who in turn gave the lamb to be sold by auction. It was bought and resold no loss than eleven times, being linally purchasod at £1 4b, the receipts from its sales in all amounting to £6 l'Js.
