OTAHUHU
At the meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council last Thursday it was resolved, on the recommendation of tbfl Works Committee, that the Council's staff of road workmen should be reduced by one as from the Ist December next, the Chairman of the Committee and the Foreman being authorised to decide as to the man to be discharged. It was also resolved that the township from the Railway Street to Station Road should be swept every Saturday morning to keep the shopping area as free from dust as possible. On the recommendation of the Public Services Committee the highest tender, that of Mr G. Handcock for £25 per annum, for leasing the Cemetery Reserve was accepted. The question of tarring and sanding the footpaths of the Borough was deferred until next year on the recommendation of the Finance and Works Committee. In connection with the Technical Department of the Otahuhu District School, a cookery class has been conducted by Miss Braidwood, every Monday evening since February ?t. On Monday evening of last ?ek the pupils gave a practical test i monstration under the direction of I ?ir instructress. Each pupil had 1 3 choice of any one of the followi y four courses, viz, breakfast, 1 ich, dinner and invalid dishes 1 e result was on the whole satisf :tory. The best display was that r. a course consisting of three d hes, viz , sausage rolls, pancakes a:1 salad. An examination in tl toretical cookery will be held Si )rtly. It is hoped that next year a larger number of young people w I take advantage of the opportf iity to acquire a knowledge of thfy a> of cooking so essential in every h< isehold. The instruction in the cl 3868 is not confined to the prept ation of fancy dishes as was shbwn by such items as porridge, bacon and eggs, stewed fruit, sago pudding and other simple dishes, which were included in the competi tion alluded to. The death occurred after a short illness on Saturday last of Mr Percival J. S. Russell, who was employed as barman at the Criterion Hotel. Deceased, who was a thorough sportsman, was for many years a resident of Otahuhu, his father, who died seme years ago, having been the proprietor of the Star Hotel. The interment took place yesterday at the Otahuhu Cemetery in the pre sence of a large number of friend", the Yicar, the Rev H. Mason, conducting the burial service. The deceased who> was only 31 years of ag« leaves a widow and four young children. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr J. Mclvo", undertaker, Otahuhu.
