THE LATE LIEUT. W. H. JOHNS Lieut. W. H. Johns, whose death in action occurred on November Ist in Palestine, whilst he was serving with the mounted troops, was a member of &n old and well-known Pukekohe family although his father (Mr J. Johns) now resides at Te Awamutu Two of tho deceased's brothers are Mr J. W. Johns (Pukekohe) ami Capt. R. W. Johns (Mauku).

Lieut. Johns was in his 26th year. He was born and educated at Pukekohe, going fioro the Pukekohe High School to the Auckland Training College to complete his studies. He chose school teaching as his profession, and became attached to the staff of the Auckland Education Board several years ago. At the time of his enlistment he was i;i charge of the Kakepuku school. He pioved himself an able teacher, was loved by ihe scholars and respected by all who knew him. He enlisted in the very early days of the war, leaving with the main body, and working his way up to the rank of sergeant. He took part in the memorable landing at Gallipoli, and was later wounded, being returned invalided to New Zealand where he remained convalescing for several months Immediately he regained his health, he re entered camp and was shortly afterwards granted a commission with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. At this time he married a Te Awamutu lady. He sailed with his reinforcements twelve months ago, became attached to the Auckland Mounted Riiles, and had subsequently served continuously in Egypt and b'ulestine. Since leaving New Zialand he gained further promotion to the rank of lieutenant. In the held of sport lie was an ardent enthusiast.
