Tapper's Pharmacy every Tuesday and Friday evenings. | TUAKAU TOWN BOARD At the monthly meeting of the Tuakau Town Board, held on Tuesday last, there were present Messrs Dynes Fulton (Chairman), W Barnabv, W. J. Deeble, H. J. Craig, J. Pirrett, Captain Ryder, with the Clerk (Mr A. H. Tapper). REQUEST FOR FOOTBRIDGE In a letter to the Board Mr H. Oldham asked that a footbridge should be constructed over the creek giving access to his house. He suggested that a plank with a few rails would serve the purpose and stated that he had been a ratepayer for over 30 years and since the old bridge went he had had no means of access from the township to his property. On the motion of the Chairman the matter was left to the Works Committee to deal with. MAORIS AND TYI'HOID Dr H. G. H. Monk. District Health Officer, Auckland, wrote acknowledging a telegram from the Board objecting to natives suffering with typhoid fever being brought to Tuakau. He stated that the Department did not desire the Maoris to bring their sick to Tuakau ana discouraged it as much as possible, but as Tuakau was the nearest spot on the river for many of them ho did not see how they were to be stopped. They required to get into touch with a medical man at times and if Tuakau was the easiest and most convenient centre for them he thought that Tuakau residents should have sufficient sympathy for them not to make objections such as were contained in the Board's telegram. The Chairman reported that since the protest had been made no cases had been brought into the district. INCREASED TOWN TOWERS The Under Secretary of Internal Affairs, Wellington, wrote acknowledging the receipt of the Board's petition for Tuakau to be given selfgoverning powers and to be free from County control. A statutory declaration, it was stated, was necessary to the effect that the population of the township exceeded 500. The Chairman reported that he had made the necessary declaration, and his action was approved. SUGGESTED DRAINAGE OII'fiOVEMKXTS With reference to the drainage arrangements at the Tuakau hotel Dr Monk, District Health Officer, wrote making the following suggestions:—(l) Tho water closets at the hotel should be abolished and the septic tank done away with ; (2) Pans to be substituted for water closets; (3) Waste water from the hotel and the private house at present running into sump in the street should be diverted and dispbsed of by broad casting; (1) Nothing but stormwater to be allowed to enter tho road gully. The Health Officer pointed out that the alterations were necessary until such time as a proper sewerage scheme was adopted for Tuakau, A regular nightsoil service was urgently required and shoul 1 be instituted as soon as possible. The Chairman reported that the recommendations were made after a recent visit by the Health Officer and the suggested improvements were'similar to those made by their own engineer.
On the motion of Mr Deeble it was resolved that notice should bo given to the owner of the hotel that no sewage matter should be allowed to go into the storm water pipes and also that a copy of the Medical Officer's letter should be sent to him. With regard to the nightsoil service the Chairman expressed the opinion that the suggestion could not at present be entertained. I'UKERAWA QUARRY The Chairman reported that he, with other members of the Board, had inspected the Pukekawa quarry, which contained some good material He, however, suggested that before any negotiations were entered into that thoir Engineer should inspect the quarry and that the Franklin County Council should be approach- | ed with a view to some joint action being taken for its acquisition if agreeable to the Council. On the motion of Mr Craig it was resolved that arrangements should bo made with the Engineer to inspect and report. WEIGHISIUDOE In connection with the proposed street improvements now being I effected which will, it is thought, ' [ necessitate the removal of the pre- ! sent weighbridge near the hotel, it ' was resolved that Mr David Madill should be approached with a view to ' making some arrangements for the removal of the weighbridge to a j more convenient site. The question was referred to the i Works Committee to deal with. Mr j Craig and other mombers mentioned the great public value of tho weighbridgo and hoped that the same j would bo retained.
