COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION. ! To the Editor] Sir,—l would like you to correct in your next issue several mistakes which your reporter has made in his account of my meeting reported in your paper of October 30th. Ist. With regard to Pongonui Road, I referred to a statement by Mr Crawford that more money had been spent on this road than from the Opuatia to Tuakau Bridge and that if this was the case the money must have been badly spent as it was still acknowledged to be the worst road in the County. 2nd. It was I who criticised Mr Crawford on his proposed Jd rate and I explained that with the high cost of labour and material his idea was impracticable. I said nothing about not having the experience of others as quoted in your article. Please correct these statements. — I am, etc., CHARLEB E. WALTER. Te Hirua, via Onewhero, November 2nd, 1917. [By an error in our report of Cr Moore's speech at Mr Walter's meeting the following appeared in reference to the Onewhero Riding finance, viz, " The overdraft on Ist October, 1917, was £657." This obviously should have read " Ist October, 1914."—Editor 1
A GRANT OK SUBSIDY | To the Editor j Sir —At a meeting of ratepayers held in the Onewhero Public Hall on October 27 th some discussion took place as to whether the £3OOO allocated to Onewhero Riding was a subsidy or a straight out grant. Councillor D. A. Moore said that nothing had c; nn under his notice to show that it had ban • metalling subsidy or a subsidy of any description. I would liko t~> draw the ratepayers' attention to what did take place when Councillor Moore was in the Council Chambers. The following report appeared in the "limes," July 13th, 1917, of the Bagl&n County Council, viz: "At the biinonthly meeting of the Raglan County Council, held at the County office, Ngaruawahia, on Wednesday last, there were present Councillors C. Johnston (Chairman), A. R. Lowry, A. McKinnon, W. Wilson, D. A. Moore, C. W. Balfe, W. Seaville, G. B. Morrison, C. C. Otway, with the Clerk, Mr Marsland —Re Onewhero-Wairamarama road, the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. W. Fraser) wrote that he was advised that the proposal to form a special rating district in connection with the proposed deviation of One-whero-Wairamarama road was again defeated at the second poll of ratepayers, and as the result of a special report received he was unable to allow any portion of the metalling subsidy of £3OOO to be expended on Henderson's Gully." I am also in possession of information from headquarters that the statement I made regarding thts subsidy was correct and that no petition had ever been drafted or signed by me to withdraw the metal and take it to Tuakau bridge. Yours, etc, S. H. CRAWFORD Onewhero, November oth, 1917.
