Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sons will hold their annual monthly stock sale at Pukekohe next Monday when some 1250 cattle of all descriptions will be yarded. Mr Chas. J. Hosking, of Waiuku, this season has at the disposal of breeders the pure-bred Clydesdale entire Poyal Marcellus and also the roadster trotting entire Young Drover. At tho annual meeting of the Waikato Winter Show Association at Hamilton on Thursday last it was decided to hold tho 1918 show from June 4th to Bth, both days inclusive. By request ,'the entertainment niven on Monday last in tho Premier Hall Pukekohe, by the Snowtlake Concert Party on behalf of the Red Cross Funds as reported on page 4, will be repeated about three weeks hence, when the proceeds will be again devoted to the Red Cross CHUfO.
Tho death occurred at the Auckland Hospital on Monday las* of Mr E/ekiel McUough, a member of a well known Pukekohe family. The deceased, who was 13 years of age, had heen ailing fur some little time. Ho was a farmer by occupation and was unmarried As a member of the Rod and dun Club he had won many trophies. The funeral took place at tho Pukekohe cemetery on Wedges lay and waslargely attended Among the 1 i members of the Main Body, N.Z. Expeditionary Force, who arrived back in Auckland on Sunday last was Piivate H. Langton. He was wounded at (rdliroli. After convalescing in Englmd, he proceeded to France, where, after 12 months' service, he contracted pleurisy, a complaint which resulted in his return to the Dominion. At the time of his enlistment Private Langton was working in the building trade in Pukekohe. The final tie of the billiard tournament recently in progress at Mr M Mclntyre's saloon, Pukekohe, was played on Tuesday last, Messrs 0. Clarke (owe 20) being the contestants in a game of 250 up. McCullagh played most consistently and scored a victory by 250 to 207. The winner's best breakes were 28 and 21 and the loser's highest break was 21. Mr J. T. Hews-ra, with a break of 32 secured the prize for the highest break of the tournament.
The transcontinental railway built by the Commonwealth of Australia to connect Adelaide and Perth was opened on Monday last. This line was commenced about two months before tlio branch line from Paerata to Waiuku was begun. The total length of new lino constructed was K63 miles. New Zealand has for long made it her boast that she leads the world in social legislation and progress, but it is evident she has still something to learn in railway building. The Pukekoho Courthouse has now been fitted with the electric light and any evening sitting of the Magistrate's Court will in future be carried on under different conditions to that of the old time inferior oil lighting. The more modern form of illumination in the police olliio will also enable Sorgt. The Right Rev. Dr Averill. Bishop of Auckland, will visit Pukekohe on Monday next, the 29th inst, and will minister confirmation at St, Andrew's Church, at 7.30 p.m Tte. H. 0. Mulholland, reported wounded on October 6th, is a brother of Mrs F. JaguHoli, of Pukekohe Hill.
Several additions have recently been made to the shelves of the Pukekohe Municipal Library, including various works dealing with the war and mauv novels.

Public recognition of the stability of Pukekohe Borough finance is testified to by the ready manner in which applications are being received for debentures in respect of the £15,100 required by the Borough Council to pay off loans falling due next month. The money is to be raised for a period of nine years at S\ per cent and over £II,OOO has already been subscribed for. The ladies of the Pukekohe branch of the Women's Patriotic League arejvorking most assiduously for the Paddy's Market to be held in the Premier Hall on Thursday and Friday of next week in aid of the branch's funds. Donations in cash or kind will be thankfully received. Various attractive competitions are being arranged for both afternoons and evenings and on Thursday afternoon a Baby Show will be in progress. Among the drafts of returned soldiers, who have reached the Dominion in the course of the past few days are 2nd Lieut. R. Gillespie, of Hunua, Corpl. Frank M. Unsworth, of Papatoetoe ; Pte. Arthur J. Weston, of Pukekohe; and Pte. Eric L. Williams, of Waiuku. One of the best crops of "early " potatoes in the Pukekohe district is now being dug by Mr D. Fausett on his farm on the Union Road. The yield is working out at from four to five tons per acre and at current prices will give a handsomo return to the grower. An important sale is to be held by Messrs Alfred Buckland & Sons, Ltd., in conjunction with the N.Z. Loan and M.A. Coy, Ltd., in the Papakura sale yards on Tuesday next when the whole of Mr E. D. MoLennan's well-known and selected herd of high grade Jersey cattle will be disposed of without reserve, Mr McLennan having sold part of hia property. In addition to the cattle, horses, ponies and pigs will be included in the offering. Particulars of the sale will be found in our advertising columns. The Washing-Up Bill, presented to Parliament this week, validates the purchase by the East Tamaki Road Boud of certain lands as a site for public buildings, provides for the validation of payments by the Pukekohe Borough Council in respect of a loan of £12,090, gives authority to the Mangere Road Board to raise a special loan for water supply purpose, snd makes provision for the enlargement of the boundaries of the Papakura Town District.
At the forthcoming election for the Franklin County Council the arrangement, for a sub division of the Pukekohe Riding, now represented by two members, will come into force whereby Pukekohe East and Pukekohe West will be constituted separate Ridings and will each have a member. The railway line, more or less, is the dividing line with the exception of the Tuakau district where the boundary for Pukekohe East extends to the Whakapipi stream
Occasion was taken on Friday the 12 th inst at the Pukekohe Fire Station to present Pte W. Short, who was on final leave, with a present as a token of the high regard entertained for him by his fellow members of the fire brigade. Cant. N. L Brown, on behalf of the Brigade, in referring to the many excellent qualities of Fireman Short wished him good luck and a safe return and asked him to accept a fountain pen as a memento of the pleasant hours spent together at Pukekohe Pte Short suitably replied. Musical items wore contributed during the evening by Messrs Claude Rickett, Clark, Graham, Young and Weston. The concert given in the Auckland Town Hall under the auspices of the Navy League, in commemoration of Nelson Day, last Monday evening, was a most successful function. After a short address by the Mayor of Auckland and resolutions of gratitude to our Navy, our Mercantile Marine, and tho Navies of our Allies, which wore passed by the audience, a most enjoyable musical programme was gone through Most of the items were, as was natural, nautical and patriotic. Features of the performance were the selections played by the band of the 3rd Auckland Mounted Regiment, the "Death of Nelson," sung by Mr Pringle, and M Hearts of Oak" and " Rule Britannia" were excellently rendered by a well-trained choir of school girls from the Napier street school. A collection taken up at the interval resulted in a substantial sum in aid of Navy Relief. Each of the audience was presented by the League with one of the leaflets containing an article from the "Times," which was reprinted from our columns by their instructions.
