COUNTY LOAN SCHEMES.

The position as regards various important loan schemes proposed by the Franklin County Council was reported on by the County Clerk (Mr Alan P. Day) at the "Council meeting last week as follows : Waiau-Karaka loan of £27,000 A reply has been received from the Public Trust Office to the effect that while nothing can be done in this matter at present me Public Trustee does not wish to finally decline the application but suggests that the Council should postpone the raising of tho loan until the end of the war, A further letter was written to the Public Trustee enquiring if :..i office would tind the money provided the Couucil agreed to accept the same by instalments spread over, say, three or four years but no reply has jet been received to this. Hunua (1917J loan of £1,500 The State Advances Office has asked to be supplied with the estimated cost of the proposed work and this information will be prepared and forwarded at an early date. Park Road (Papakura) loan of i'loO-The Special Order authorising the raiding of this loan will be submitted for confirmation at a .special meeting of the Council called for Thursday nest after which a special rate may be levied as security for the loan and fiaal application made for same to the St its Advances Offio •, which is finding the money. Maioro Top Road loan £330 proposed Special Roll for this rating area has been lodged for the required time and no objections received to same. The form of petition has been prepared and provided same is signed in time a special order authorising the raising of this lo«n could be adopted at the Special Me-ting on Thursday next. Karaka Bridges Special Rating Area loan £370 —The proposed special roll i f this rating area has been lodged for the required time and no objections received to same. It is pr >posed to adopt a special nr.ler at tho Special Meeting ori I'hursday next authorising the raising of this loan. Proposed Goodwin road (Aka Aka) L-jan—Difficulty is being experienced in compiling the necessary spacial rolls for this loan but the work is beiug pushed on as speedily as possible. When the necessary information is available preliminary application will be made to the State-Ad-vances office for the various loans.

Arising out of the Clerk's report, Cr Henry emphasised the fact that the st-uleis of the Waiauand Karaka districts were anxious that the work of metalling there should be proceeded with this summer. Every raeaus in the power of the Council, Cr Henry urged, should be used to push the"matter ahead and he suggested that in the ev.mt of a loan not being obtained from the Public Trust Office application should be made elsewhere. Failing that Cr Henry suggested that debentures should be issued.
