OTAHUHU.

OTAHUHU SCHOOL COMMITTEE SCHOOL ACCOMMODATION OVERTAXED A meeting of the Otahuhu School Committee was held on Thursday of last week.

The headmaster's report wa3 read stating that the school roll had reached the reoord of 524, and the average attendance the previous week had been 481*2. The highest attendance and record for the school was reached on the the previous Monday, viz., 491. The accommodation of the school was greatly overtaxed, and in view of the approaching warmer weather every endeavour should be made to procure a new schoolhouse, or as a temporary measure to rent some adjacent hall It was resolved to ask the Education Board to pay a visit to the school during working hours so that they could see for themselves the overcrowded state of the school. A letter was received from the Department of the Minister for Labour which stated that the proposed road to Favona estate would shortly be commenced by the Otahuhu Borough Council. It was reported that as n result of the efforts of Standard 3 pupils to raise the first instalment on the Piano Fund (for school use) the sum of £2 10s was raised by a bottle gathering afternoon.—lt is hoped the public of Otahuhu will help the boys of the other classes to establish a good fund, as a piano is a very great help in the school. Gratification was expressed at the fact that Mr West, Chairman of the Committee, who had been confined to his home for some time, was now able to get about again. Messrs Curry and Kemj)lay, delegates to a recent meeting of the School Committee Association, gave a report of the proceedings and the same was adopted. It was resolved that the School Committee should become members of the Auckland Primary School Committee's Association.

On Thursday evening of last week, A L. Sheppard was the recipient of a case of pipes as a token of esteem from his friends, who gathered to bid him farewell on his return to camp to rejoin the 31st reinforcements. 2nd Lieut. Gerald S Hall, son of Mr Henry J. Hall of Otahuhu, whose return to New Zealand was chronicled in our last issue, has come back to receive his commission, having earned his promotion on the field. He is to be congratulated on his achievement, as he enlisted as a Private. He will probably be'leaviflg again with an early reinforcement.
