Mr J. P. Asher, of Pukekohe, by advt in this issue, announces his candidature for the forthcoming election of a representative for the combined d ; .stricts of Franklin County, Pukekohe Borough and Waiuku on the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.

Included among the officers and men who arrived back in Auckland yesterday were the following : Sur-geon-Gapt. H. H. Cheesman (Tuakau), Lieut. G. S. Hall (Otahuhu), Pte B C Carpenter (Puni), Pte F. A. Porter (Puni), Pte W H. Shove (Papakura) and Sergt. J. H. Stone (Papatoetoe). Part of the land acquired by the Pukekohe Borough Council for the site of the new water reservoir on Roose's Hill, viz., the surplus, is to be laid down in grass. With seats erected thereon, as is also intended, it will form an ideal picnic spot as it is situated on the summit of the hill with a commanding view of the surrounding country. Mr W. Coster, Pukekohe's courteous postmaster, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to the Relieving Staff with headquarters at Hamilton. He has held his present position for the past three years and a half. Particulars as to his successor are not yet obtainable. Mr Coster expects to leave Pukekohe in about three weeks' time.

A sub-comnjittee of the Franklin County Council, consisting of a majority of members, yesterday conferred with Mr J. Batty, Chairman of the Karaka Road Board, and agreed that the Road Board's plant should be acquired by the Council to enable tho Board to adjust its finance prior to merging in the County. The Drury Trustee Board, the members of which are Crs J. Flanagan and R Lyons (Franklin County Council) and Mr J. Batty (Karaka Road Board), have been working quietly but zealously for four or five months past for the cause of national efficiency. They have furnished reports as to the cases of some .'3O reservist* and have taken over the trust of one farm and the general supervision of others. The names of 27 lads 10 years and over), who have volunteered for harvesting work in the district during the coming season, have now been supplied by the National Efficiency Board to the Drury Trustee Board and applications for their services phould be made to members of the latter Board or to the County Clerk (Mr Alan P. Day). Xho Trustee Board are entrusted with the responsibility of seeing that the boys will be weil treated and looked after and also that provision is made for the payment of suitable remuneration proporti mate to the work done.

A typical spirit of brotherhood was displayed on Saturday afternoon last in Pukekohe when members of the Loyal Puk kohe Lodge of Odd fellows, M.U., reinforod by friends, met on Bro. W. Pratt's farm and concluded the potato planting, which had been 'eft unfinished by reason of the owner's serious illness neces sitating his removal t > the Auckland Hospital. Operations were in charge of Messrs H. Keith, J. ilcKauut-y, R Dalton, R Berriinan and Capt. Elf'ord (Salvation Army). Mr Pratt's many friends will be glad to learn th.it his health is improving and that lie h likely to be able to leave the hospital next week.

Among those who returned to Auckland yesterday was Sergt. J H. Stone, son of Mr and Mrs H. J. Stone, of Pukekohe. Sergt Stone who left with the Bth Reinforcements in November, 1915, was wounded in the Somnie battle but is now progressing satisfactorily. He reached his home at Papatoetoe last evening with his wife and parents.

Writing on Jaly 31st from France to the parents and family of the late Pte. R. McDivitt, son of Mr W. McDivitt, of Pukekohe. who was killed in action on July 25th, Sergt. Ai 8. Fraser, as a chum of the deceased soldier and on behalf of the Section, says, " I am taking this the first opportunity of conveying to you on behalf of the members of Reg's section our deepest sympathy in your sad bereavement. It has been a terribly sad blow to all of us a) Reg. was one of the most popular * boys' in the section. He was killed at 5 o'clock on the morning of July 25th while out with two other 1 boys ' of the section repairing telephone wires in the trenches. A shell burst close to them, killing all three instantly. Reg. is buried in a military cemetery behind the line and his grave is well cared for." A similar letter of sympathy has also been received from Signaller Evan Girven, who says, " Reg. was known throughout the Battalion as amongst its bravest men For his gallantry and fearlessness during the Messines attack he was decorated with the Military Medal and none deserved it more.
