PAPAKURA.
A SKIT ON LOCAL NAMES. The following contribution was one of the essays read at the recent " Journal Night " of the Papakura Literary and Debating Society, viz. : " Papakura is a good place in which to spend the winter as we have plenty of Cole, Wood and Slack, Carpenters to build a Woodhouse for us, and no matter how Baddeley it jains we have always Dryland. In any case who cares for rain with a Mackintosh on his back, Hobbs on his boots and a Cain-handled umbrella over his head. If nature hath charms for you take a Seaton one of our Hills and admire our Wood?, Mears, Dales, Hills, Corries and Caves, our charming Westwood and lovely green Brookfields. Is Butterworth much here ? It should not be, for have we not Grandiiolds on which to graze our cows. Any Hunter who wishes to Hunt, provided he is Hardie and Sharp, may even catch a Lyon if he Bates his trap, say, with a young Bull. Although we have three Kirks we are not all Presbyterians. A church when it nearly always Hales is too cold for most people. In some ways we are very contrary. We have Shepherds who do not herd sheep, Hunters who Hunt not, Carters without carts, Coopers who make no casks, though we have an abundant supply of Porter. All our Walkers walk, but strange to say our Blacks are White and so are our Browns, whilst some of our Youngs never grow old though they are grey-haired. In the matter of Moons we vie with Jupiter which has eight moons while we have five, but in our case they are nearly always visible by day. We are not given to literary composition which is not strange, for in all the district there are only two Knibbs. Neither are we proud although our tea and sugar are served to us by an Earl."

A special meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held yesterday when there were present Messrs R. M. Gillespie (chairman), F. Holt, H. Linstrom, T. Campbell, T. H. Markwick. W. Richardson, with the clerk (Mr H. W. Geissler).. On the recommendation of the Sanitary Committee to issue legal proceedings in respect of five defaulters it was decided to refer the matter to the Board's solicitor for him to take such proceedings as might be deemed necessary and to make a "4est" case of one. Miss McKenzie and Mr Toung waited on the Board and asked for partial exemption from the operation of the sanitary service on the grounds of hardship. They were informed that if they applied to the Board in writing their applications would receive favourable consideration.
