TUAKAU.

TOWN BOARD MEETING At a meeting of the Tuakau Town Board held on Tuesday last there were present Messrs Dynes Fulton (chairman), W. Barnaby, J. Pirret, and J. H. Craig, with the clerk (Mr A. H. Tapper), THE STREETS' LOAN The Public Trust Office, Wellington, notified the Board that the voucher had been forwarded to Tuakau in respect of the loan of £2OOO and that the interest in the debentures in respect of such loan would be payable half yearly. A RATES QUESTION The Rev L. Foulkes, in a lengthy letter, complained of the amonnt of rates charged him, alleging that he had paid about £3 too much and that he had taken legal advice on the subject. The Clerk explained the position as to the rates appearing in the Bate book.

On the motion of Mr Craig it was resolved that the Clerk should write asking the Rev Foulkes to call so that the position could be explained to him.

THANKS Messrs P. A. Rowe and U. M. Osbourne wrote expressing their joint thanks for prompt attention to the path on the Henderson road. The Chairman remarked that those sort of letters were always welcome and were only too few. LOAN ACCOUNT The Chairman reported that in company with the Board's Engineer he had ascertained the amount of metal at their quarry which had been paid for. It became necessary to transfer the sum of £503 8s 5d in respect of metal from the (ieneral to the Loan Acsount and this had been done. The action of the Chairman was approved. O ROWING POPULATION The Chairman expressed the opinion that a census should be taken of the town area as if the population was over 500 the Board could then be free from the control of the Franklin County Council and could obtain greater freedom of action. Incidentally, the Chairman mentioned that the associations with the County had always been of a most cordial nature.

It was decided that a census should be taken to-morrow (Saturday) morning. ACCOUNTS Accounts amounting to £B9 4s 2d were passed for payment. AN EXPLANATION [To the Editor]

Sir—This morning as I went to the station I was greeted with the remark "Has it become the fashion for Whangarata folks to poke their noses into meetings with which they have no business," and later on at Tuakau another remark was made: "I hear that Whangarata has shifted and is now in Tuakau." Both remarks evidently referred to my taking part in a meeting arranged by the New Zealand Dairy Association for Mr Pacey to meet the suppliers )f Tuakau and Whangarata on the evening of the 30th ult. Whoever is responsible for furthering the idea that I was not entitled to be present must have been ignorant of this fact and suffering badly from the "butterfat mania" from which the district is Buffering so badly just now. That there is a keen rivalry between the two parties is well known but I am pleased to be on friendly terms with leaders on both sides and [ wish those to understand that I completely ezonorate all of them from any share in raising the rumour. Had the author of it taken the least trouble to read the circular which was posted to every supplier in both districts he would have seen for himself; had he asked at the meeting he would have been told or the circular read to him. He did neither, apparently, or he would not have bo conclusively shown his ignorance. I recommend him to endea-

vuur to acquire a little knowledge. I may add that I have been on friendly terms with both the gentlemen who made the remarks and am certain that they were only repeating an idea someone had supplied them with. I trust he (the supplier of tht idea) fully realises the foolish position in which he has placed himself. —Yours, etc., G. P. EWINO. Whangarata, :3rd Sept. 1917.
