SPRING FLOWER SHOW.

A Brilliant Display. Under the auspices of St James' Presbyterian Church the fourth annual Bulb and Spring Flower Show was commenced yesterday in the Premier Hall. Ih>the absence •f the Mayor (Mr H. G. R. Mason) Mr E. Allah (Buckland) performed the opening ceremony and in a pleasant speech thanked the exhibitors for their excellent entries and wished the show every success. In the daffodil and cut flower classes there was an unusually fine display. Mr J. Allan (Pahmure) the judge, remarked thatjjthe whole of the exhibits in the daffodil section

were particularly praiseworthy, i especially those of Messrs Bull and Hall, as the wet weather must have a contending force against producing such unique specimens. Decorated tables were an evidence of artistic taste, all the exhibits deserving much praise. The cookery section was well sustained and some good examples of the culinary art came forward. In needlework the exhibits were far above the average, especially in the lace work. There were some good specimens of photography on view while the paintings exhibited were meritorious, the first prize ("Shoeing the Bay Mare") being much admired. In woodwork the judge (Mr Lenehan) found great difficulty in deciding on the first prize, the specimen which was given the second award being little inferior to the first The following acted as judges: Needlework, Mrs H. H. D. Wily and Miss Graham ; bakery and knitting, Mrs Sharpe (Rama Rama); photography, Miss Rid dell; woodwork, Mr H. Lenehan ; decorative and pit plants and children's cut blooms, Mrs Mackay; daffodils and cut blooms, Mr J. Allan.

Stallholders, who did a busy trade, were : Lollies, the Misses

Madill, Rodgers, Stembridge, Potter and McMullan ; sewing, Mesdames D. and J. Roulston and W. T. Jones; produce, Mesdames G. Ingram, J. Adams and Warnook.

Special mention should be made of the excellent luncheon served by Mesdames J. and D. Roulston and S. H. Gallagher, at which the judges and stewards were entertained.

During the evening a programme ol voeal and instrumental' music was submitted. Miss N. Perkins sang "Britain is my Land," the flags of the Union Jack and the Allies being shown with pretty effect by a number of boys and girls who joined in the chorus. The action Bong, "Diana and her Maids," was also effectively rendered by several ladies becomingly attired. In the children's, competition representative of Spring there were 4 entries in the class under 4 years and the same number of entries for under 10 years. Mesdames H. H. D. Wily and W. Butterworth were the judges and the awards were, Dna and Brian Nixon Ist and 2nd respectively "under four years" and Phyllis Lysnar and Moira Nixon Ist and 2nd prizes respectively "under 10 years." The organising and secretarial duties were in the capable hands of

Mrs J. M. Baxter and Miss E. W. Bodgers, who are to be complimented on the able way in which the details were so well carried out and the Rev. 8. Nixon assisted by a band of willing workers did good service towardi making the Bhow such a ■uccesg. Mrs S.
