BUCKLAND.
A FAREWELL AND A WELCOME One of the most successful socials that has taken place in Buckland for some time was held in the hall last Wednesday night, to farewell Privates Wolfe, Harper, and liartland, and to welcome homo Private W. Marshall. Mr E. Allan occupied the chair, and in the course of his remarks made a strong appeal for support to the recomendations of the Efficiency Board, especially as regards the liquor traffic. Mr J. K. Hamilton, in bidding farewell to the departing soldiers, referred to their many good qualities and Mrs H. H. D. Wily, on behalf of the Ladies' Patriotic League, presented each of them with a pareel, and wished them God speed and a safe return.
The following items were rendered during the evening, viz., songs by Mesdames J. Wvlie and Turner, Misses Bagnall and Kerrin, Messrs Boy Johnston, T. Walker, and A. Young. Mr A. P. Home scored well by his singing of a Maori song in character and Miss Jessie Ferguson contributed two recitations in a very pleasing manner. Privates Harper, on behalf of his mates and himself, thanked all for their good wishes and for the pleasant evening's entertainment provided for them.
After supper had been done full justice to all joined in singing Auld Lang Syne and God Savo the King, the hall then being cleared for dancing which was kept up till the wee 9mall hours. WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC LEAGUE The annual meeting of the Buckland Branch of the Women's Patriotic League was held in the hall on 16th August There was a fair attendance, Mrs H. H. D. Wily presiding. The President reported that the amount of knitting bad increased and that the League was on a sound basis.
The Treasurer reported as follows : Paid away in cash, £122 10s 3d; collected in the district during the year for wool fund, £37 7s 2d. The following work was done during tne year, viz. : 405 pairs 90cks, 32 caps, 21 belts, 15 scarves, IS pillows, '.' pairs mittens, 100 sanitary shirts, and several parcels of old clothes were received." The subscriptions for wool for July were as follows : Mrs Hewitt Bs, Mesdaraes N. Jameison and J. Barber ss, Mrs Haire 4s, Mrs Jackson 3s 6d, Mrs Davy 3s, Mesdames Johnston, J. Smith, snr., Milroy, and M. Vodanovich 2s Gd each, Mrs Peters 2s, and Mrs Bland Is. A sum of £5, proceeds from a social for "boys" Xuias parcels was received from Mesdames Appleby (2; and Wilcox.
The officers elected for the ensuing year were as follows: President, Mrs H. H. 1). Wily: Treasurer, Miss Johnston; Secretary, Miss M. Davy.
