MAUKU
ROLL OF HONOUR TEE LATE LOE -BERGT. V C KAVANAGH Lee. Sergt. Vivian C. Kavanagh, repoited killed in action, was well known throughout the Mauku district. He was the youngest son of Mrs C. Kavanagh, now of Grey Lynn. He was born at Mauku, attended the local school, and resided in the district for over 20 years. On Mrs Kavanagh selling out of business at Mauku the deceased engaged in the building tiade in Auckland. Ho made a particular study of architecture and designed many stylish and comfortable residences in the city and suburbs. Lie Sergt Kavanagh went as a member of the 10th Contii g j nt, to the Boer war, sailing fiotn New Zealand in tiio troopship Prajton Grange, He offered his seivices for the present war some two vears and left with the liifle Brigade. Up till the time of his death he had been on active service in France He was an enthusiastic sportsman, being looked on as ore of Auckland's best representative hockey and cricket players. Whilst torn ing With the Auckland representative hockey team in the South Island some yea r s ago lie was known as til < •' juggler," his lightning woik with the hockey stick fairly astonishing his opponents. As a cricketer he was probably Auckland's best all-round man, his hard hitting and quick scoring making him a general favourite with the public, whilst as a bowler and fieldsman he was always responsible for biilliant work.
General regret is expressed throughout the district at his death, bis genial manner and kindly disposition having m de him a general favourite. Heartfelt sympathy is also extended to Mrs Kavanagh in her irreparable loss. Pte Cecil Kavanagh, a brother of deceased, left with the same Reinforcements and though he has been wounded once he is again back in the firing line in France. In a recent letter Pte. C. Kavanagh stated that though " Vivian " and he had been about two years in France neither had had an opportunity of having a trip to England but he hoped to be ge'ting off shortly.
