KARAKA ROAD BOARD
Monthly Meeting At the meeting of the Ivaraka Road Board hold 011 Saturday last there were present Messrs J. Batty (Chairman); D, JamiesoD, J. Schlaepfer, Bryant and J. MrPherson with the Clerk (Mr EL, E. Glasson). nrxi r.MAx-ruKEKoirE koa" A complaint was made in a letterto the Board by Mrs M. Johnston (Runciman) of the damage done to the road fronting her property by a traction engino using the same and making the road impassable. The result was that she was unablo to cart her cream to the factory. Mrs Johnston pointed out that she had already many difficulties to contend with owing to her son having gone to the Front and she hoped the Board would make tho road passable.
The Riding member Ma<2 Pherson) was authorised to do what he thought necessary to meet the complaint. EXCHANGE Of LAIC!'
In connection with the proposed exchange of land and the closing of a road through Messrs Urcjuhart's property at Karaka, the UnderSecretary of tho Public Work's Department, Wellington, wrote in reply to the Board that it did not appear from the information before them that the roads to bo taken and closed were an equitable exchange under Section 11 of tho Land Act, 1&08, as the area of land contained in the road to be closed was 9a. 3r. 31 p., whilst tho area of land contained in the now road was . r >a. Ir. 35p. Tho exchange was most inequitable in view of tho fact that the land contained in tho roads closed under the Land Act, 1908, could only be granted in exchango for land taken for a new road under the same Act. The Department asked if the owneis, who wero obtaining the title to the land contained in the old road, were paj-ing anything by way of equality of exchango. Information was also asked as to the value per acre of the land contained in tho old and the new roads respectively. On the motion of Mr Jamieson the Chairman and Mr Bryant were authorised to inspect the respective properties so as to secure information as to the position and values of the land referred to.
![XANTE In view of the Board's Bank overdraft it was suggested that a rate should he struck to enable the Board to discharge their legal liabilities. The Clerk was instructed to prepare a financial statement showing amounts allocated to each road and the sums spent so that tho question of the proposed rate could be considered at tho next meeting. PAEIIATA ROAD A complaint was made in a letter to the Board by Mrs 0. Stevens (Paerata) of the bad state of the road from Gainsford corner and she asked that the water tables should be cleared.
No definite action was taken, but the Board intimated that the work would probably be done as soon as tho weather improved. THE MERGING O;VESTIO.\
Some informal discussion took place on tho proposed merging with the County. The Chairman stated that he did not think his (the Karaka) Ward would agree to merge unless they were distinctly assured that all the money collected in rates would bo expended on the roads. There was, said the Chairman, some difference of opinion on the question, but whatever their linancial position was they would endeavour to do their duty as a Board and discharge _ their obligations satisfactorily. ACCOUNTS Accounts amounting to £l2O 10s lOd were passed for payment.
