At the meeting of the Auckland Executive of the Navy League on Wednesday evening attention was drawn to a leading article on the League which appeared in the "Times" on June 12th last. It was resolved to have five thousand copies reprinted in leaflet form for circulation in aid of propaganda work. It will be remembered that a short while ago this article led to attempts—which we believe are proving successful—to establish a branch of the League in Sydney.

A plentiful supply of water has been located on land belonging to Mr Adolph Wright, at Pukekohe Hill. Mr H. J. Stone, boring Engineer, reports that water was found after boring through solid rock at a depth of 135 feet and that water has been pumped up at the rate of 650 gallons per hour. The spring was first located by the Rev H. Mason, the well known water diviner, of Otahuhu and the supply of such a large amount of water has given great satisfaction to Mr Wright. Announced to arrive in Pukekohe on Wednesday, August 22nd, and to receive a great public reception at the Premier Hall at 8 p.m. is Billie Burke in the opening chapter of "Gloria's Romance." You will love every moment of this brilliant film novel. Each episode is more fascinating than the last. Billie Burke is "Gloria," and a more delightful tomboy never larked or frolicked on the screon. Gorgeous scenes of Palm beach and the wild and trackless everglados. This production cost £50,000 and vou will say it was worth it. A star drama will also bo shown with every programme.— (Advt) At the meeting of the Executive of tho Auckland Branch of the Navy League held at their rooms on Wednesday ovening it was decided to establish a local relief fund. It was felt that there was a necessity for doing something for those among thom who were maimed, and for the dependants of those killed. The establishment of this fund is of some interest to this district by reason of the fact that the. first amount placed to its credit is £7, the proceeds of horae-hair given by some Mauku farmers.

With transactions with the Maoris notoriously being of a hazardous nature if credit is given them, the additional anomaly of the native law in making it impossible in the case of the death of a Maori for creditors to recover from the estate of the deceased person debts owing to them was mentioned in the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court on Thursday of last week in an action brought by Mr H. G. R. Mason, solicitor, of Pukekohe, to re cover the sum of £53 7s 6d from a local Maori, named Manu Taupua, alias HoriWarena, in respect of money lent. Mr W. P. Hopkins appeared for the plaintiff, whose case was that the money was advanced to Manu and his wife, Ngamoko, to enable them to pursue their claims in the Native Land Court. Manu was not possesssed of means but the wife had property. She, however, bad since died and her property had by a Succession Order issued by the Native Land Court parsed to her two daughters and as the daughters took advantage of the native law, which enabled them to escape liability for their mother's debts, the father was sued for the amount. The defendant, on his part, through an interpreter, claimed that the money had been lent to his wife and not to him. In answer to the Magistrate (Mr E. Rawson, SM) the defendant stated that in addition to actual property his daughter's secured £4OO from their mother's estate in respect of land sold. Mr Mason remarked that although actual casn in hand at the time of death might be recoverable from he believed the Native Land Court treated cash for land sold as immune from claims in the same way that property could not be attached. The Magistrate suggested that as Manu disputed liability and had no means the daughters should be jointly sued with him and then particulars as to the position of the deceased woman's estate could be ascertained. That course was agreed to by the plaintiff and the case was adjourned until September 6th, the defendant, who had failed to put in a notice of defence, being allowed leave to defend on payment to plaintiff of £2 2s costs.
