On Friday last a social, organised by the School Committee, was held in the Mauku school, to testify parents' appreciation of the good work done by the teacher, Mr G. A. Gutry, during the ten years that he has been headmaster of the school. The large attendance, over one hundred persons, old and young, spoke eloquently to the high esteem in which Air Gutry is held. Mr A. Franklin presided. A good programme was submitted by local talent as follows : Pianoforte solos by Miss W*iin and MissE. Cutfield pianoforte duets by Misses Kenny and Warin and Misses Cutfield and Warin; songs by Miss Warin (encured), Messrs Gutry, Queenin, Wvatt, Guthrie, Davis and Johns ; duets by Mr and Mrs Gutry (encored), and a trio by Mr and Mrs Gutry and Mr Guthrie. Miss Kenny played tho accompaniments. Mr J. Gillon cuntributod a recitation.
During the interval the Chairman, on behalf of the householders, presented Mr Gutry with a kit lag and fountain pen, and Mrs Gutry with a pair of silver butter dishes, and in a few well chosen remarks commented on the good tone of the school and hoped Mr Gutry would still have a lung term as li> admaster. Mr Uutry suitably replied on bohalf of Mrs Uutry and himself. The Committee provided tea and the ladios the district supplied an abundance of toothsome delicacies to which full justice was done.
