PAPAKURA

In connection with the third anniversary of the declaration of war by England on Germany and in memory of the fa'len a special service is to be held in the Papakura Anglican Church on Sunday evening next when the preacher will be the Yicar (the Eev W. C. Wood) Private D. J. MacFarlane, whose death in France was recently announced, was a' son of Mr D McFarlane, of Papakura He enlisted from the King Country, in the 21st Reinforcements preferring foot fighting in France to Mouuted duty in Egypt. His two brothers are engaged on active service. His father is an old Imperial Reservist, and received a cablegram from King George and Queen Mary, as well as a telegram from Lord Islington and the Prime Minister sympathising with him in his son's death. Pte MacFarlane also served in the Boer War. At the last meeting of the School Committee attention was drawn to the fact that some school children had asked their parents for money to purchase books and had not done so, but had spent such money on lollies, etc. After consideiing the matter it was decided that the Secretary should interview the headmaster. As a result of the interview he has now given instructions to the teaching staff that in future parents are to be asked not to hand over money to their children for school requirements without a note being received f<om the teacher. A meeting of the Ratepayers' Association wa* held last evening, a report of which will appear in our next issue. The Literary and Debating Society will hold a meeting on Thursday evening next, when a large attendance is anticipated. Some people are always finding fault with the doings (or misdoings) of the Town Board, but just lately their conscience has been affected and the result is the fault has been with the weather. The local surfaceman has been seen doing his best to clear the water tables on the Main South read and other places. Perhaps later on we shall hear of a Papakura Congratulation Society !
